Ummā¦ Am I the only one who remembers the DT 900 600 oHm review? Or him actually drinking for the T90?
Okay, going back over the 990 review, maybe not them as much, but the T90ā¦ He even said that he would take the m50x over them, and we all know how much he HATES the m50x.
I think he was more pissed about the loose tolerances on his unit regarding the pad mount (could just be a QC issue), and how his headphone sounded to his earsā¦ It could also be how being in lockdown could be getting to him, as it is for many people. The indefinate nature of the lockdown (and how vocal some of the political leaders here in the US and their loyal followers have been insisting upon it remaining this way essentially until the virus is eradicated) actually has a rather serious effect on the human condition. By nature, we need the mental and social stimulation beyond an electronic form.
So I think the discussion in the Massdrop comments section for these is pretty telling about what people think about these. The only super negative review so far has come from Zeos. Thereās few middling reviews. The rest just call them a solid headphone with a very unique tuning and sound sig.
This is old reviewsā¦ I havenāt even seen these actually. But yes, he also praised the DT177X Go for not having sharp treble last year, but now he has Sundaras on his wall and Grado SR60s (10dB mountain at 10khz) for his tube ampā¦ oh, and he liked the Heliosā¦
Iām gonna drop Joshās review of the Sendy Aiva here as a contrast in how to do a review of a product you donāt like:
Josh does question the legality of several different headphone models under different company names using the same basic design. He does so by saying heās not sure whatās going on. He doesnāt use that or his dislike of the product to dismiss other reviewers or disparage the integrity of the people at the company who sells the product. Well done, Josh.
Sidenote, pulled them out again to listen to them. They are not bad at all 0_o. Have em plugged into my Gilmore. Just had my clears on too lol.
God, the people ragging on these either hate mid centric headphones, didnāt let them break in, got a bad pair, or are listening with a bad amp/dac imo.
Will keep mine listed (cause moneyyyy). But will be listening to them in the meantime lol.
I also like how everyone has jumped on the āzeos hates them so they must be the worst headphone of all timeā bandwagon lol.
Probably me, not a fan of most headphones like this for some reason. Might be a magical pair out there for me with this signature but this one isnāt it. Aeons all the way for me and are the ones I put on 80% of the time. I donāt rag on them though. I think they are good just not for me. Let me know though about those pads I am curious maybe post some images of them too in comparison. I tried them myself despite what zeos says I donāt think they are āthatā bad but they can sound veiled till burned in a bit.
Thatās fair though. I know Resolve dislikes them for a couple specific (but valid reasons) which Iāll leave for him to discuss in his review. However, he was much more positive and reasonable than Zeos lol.
A lot of that goes away with the audio chain you choose. Running the Gilmore, and these actually sound real good now. A/bing back and forth with the mlp and gilmore. The veil sounds more natural than veiled through the gilmore (still slightly veiled, but the presentation is much better). They sound pretty bad in comparison out of the MLP (whereas itās the reverse for the hexv2ās). The erish is a bit worse than the gilmore. The archel doesnāt hold a candle. Seems like these want a super analytical and/or clean chain.
In regards to mid centric headphones, Iām pretty sure thatās all I have lol. Elegia, Clear, and Eikon are all mostly flat and/or a tiny bit mid forward. The hexv2s are minorly U shaped, but is refreshing and not egregious.
I did think this could be the case. I had it paired at the time to a liquid spark and Topping D10, of which is the only thing I had in house at the time. I had only starting realizing the importance of audio chains after I picked up my liquid platinum and paired it to my T1 balanced and Aeon Open X balanced and the difference blew me away paired that to a bifrost 2 and is currently my favorite setup.
Pretty sure I donāt have any mid centric headphones. I did have a k7xx for a while and ad1000x where the mids and highs were pushed forward but the overall design of the actual headphone and the inaccuracy of the k7xx caused me to get rid of them. I am actually curious on W signatures though since I love V signature. I dunno I just donāt find enjoyment in mids being center stage, atleast without a good bass and somewhat raised treble. Personal Preferences and all that.
That will sound bad afaik. These via the archel now are pretty bad in comparison to either the mlp or the gilmore. I would assume the archel and spark are comparable.
Yea. The 3W per channel with the naturalness it provides do wonders for some cans. Works really well with my hexv2s. Gives them the full bodied tone and slam that I want out of them. I still like my Gilmore though for both the focals and the pm-50.
I mean, there is a phrase, āmids are where the music livesā. I find this to be accurate. You still have to have good treble and bass of course, but if the mids are withdrawn / everything is bass / treble boosted I canāt get into the music at all. Whereas a slightly withdrawn treble or bass is passable.
The thing is, none of my neutral / mid forward cans are lacking in the treble and bass department. They just push the mids out of hiding. They also donāt lack in slam or detail. The PM-50s are the ones that struggle the most in that department, but with the right chain they still pass muster.
Thatās what I was figuring honestly. They are one of those headphones that respond to some particular setups while others just make them sound bad. I had the same issue with both my dt 880s as well as my T1 and in some cases the Sundara just sounds horrid, at that time though I was using a cheapo gaming esque amp/dac.
This is probably why I enjoy the dt 1990 so much in my collections. Itās a neutral yet still having that nice v-like signature making it a neutral bright so the mids are definitely present just not the front of the stage. Like you mentioned earlier though I have considered checking out other headphones like Elegia and Elex itās just that the pm-50 just doesnāt seem to do it for me. Struggles a bit too much. Pretty sure iirc Sennheisers were the ones known for their mid forward balanced sound though.
New pads arrived. Pretty much just the thicc boi pads with some width taken out. Is a little less on ear. Not a huge improvement fit-wise. Sound change is both positive and negative. Treble sounds less grainy, bass is more defined, less bass, muffledness is slighly more pronounced in the mids, less pronounced in bass and treble.
Thats pretty disappointing to hear imo. I would hope it would be much more on ear with a better sound to it. Taking out the bass is a big deal breaker for me and making that muffled sound more prominent is definitely a bad thing.
PM-50 is still for sale for $250. I have clears, elegias, and eikons, so these donāt get the head time they deserve. If you want a chance at a great competitor to the sundaras lemme know.
Z couldnāt have been more fucking wrong lol. Problem is that his review tanked any demand anyone had for them. No one picked up any pairs, so the reviews are limited. So instead of selling for what I think theyāre worth ($350), Iām forced to lower it to a fucking steal and lose money. If people donāt take that deal itās their loss. These are great cans and, honestly, after that review (and his review of the zmf cans) I donāt listen to zeos at all anymore lol. Dude has proved that heās either lost his marbles or has become more of an entertainer than a reviewer. Going from reviewing the cans to bashing andover was a bridge too fucking far.
I love the PMs, but they donāt compete with my Eikons and Clears (both headphones more than 3x the PMs price). I literally feel guilty that they donāt get head time as much as they deserve. I sold my sundaras to keep these lol. I firmly believe they are better if you like musicality or mids.
And no. Not overpriced. $500 is too much. $400 is damn reasonable. $300 is too low. Donāt blindly follow reviewers lol. Listen to the gear, or get a sufficient number of peopel whoāve heard and hate them (turns out, zeos is one of the very few with a distinctly negative take on them), before judging and parroting his words. Kinda pissing me off now how frequently people who watch one video from a āreviewerā come and bash a product theyāve never sampled. Both funny and asinine at the same time.
I mean, if this was before I had my aeons I would snag those from you in a heart beat provided I could find some wider pads as those pads sucked balls lol. At $250 though thats a hell of a deal dude. Maybe put them on ebay? place the bid at like $250-$300. Pm-50s are only purchaseable through andover making ebay a good place for it.
For me they definitely didnāt hold a candle against my balanced aeon open xās lol.
Agreed here, you can try them yourself and return them if you donāt like them. Andover has a good return policy on them. He went way overboard with the dt880s which killed his overall credibility for me on reviewing. While itās true those scale well with higher grade gear it doesnāt require a speaker amp by any means. PM-50 I think the worst issue is simply the pads change themā¦ your good
