Bad Guy Good Audio Rankings and stuff (under construction) (Part 1)

As we say over here, “Keep her lit”.

When you’ve heard a number of the artists live that’s the hallmark of a good set/chain if they can replicate that…not saying that’s neutral just saying that’s how it should sound well at least to me.

On the other hand though, it is very rare that a live performance sounds like a studio recording.

It does happen, especially in small, excellent venues, but most of the time, it sounds quite different.

The problem with “faithful reproduction of the original” is that, first, what do we want to reproduce faithfully?

For example, if I record with a band, should it be a faithful representation of what we sound like in the room we are playing in?

Should it represent what was coming through the monitors used to mix and produce, in the mixing room?

Should it be faithful to what the studio decided was a “good fit” for the majority of systems?

The whole “faithful to the original” is something that is almost impossible to define.

I don’t want to clog up this thread with a discussion which is very interesting but can go around in circles for a very long time. In case anyone is bored and interested, I did post a longer “opinion” in regards to the use of EQ here: EQ... good or bad?

Yep Arturo Sandoval live at Ronnie Scotts and Roy Harper live at the Red Lion Kings Heath Birmingham UK (on a few occasions) less than 20 feet away gives you a good insight to what jazz and acoustic guitars sound like still not sure this’s “neutral” though :man_shrugging:

You are touching on circle of confusion topics, which are central to this concept of neutrality and “faithful reproduction”.

Is that the same Roy Harper that Led Zeppelin did a song about?

Aye the very same one :+1:
Had a meal with him and his lady when he played Birmingham Polytechnic my mate was in charge of his sound system and monitor.

Many of us have weird intersections with people that are interesting to us, more so if we pick jobs in related fields, or grew up around it. Don’t you know Billy Squier?

My wife is related to Alice Cooper, and went to high school with E40. She had a brief singing career and met tons of industry people.

I knew the manager for a guitar player from Omaha, Michael Lee Firkins. Firkins opened for Satriani a few times in the 90s, and I got to have a beer backstage with Joe Satriani after a show and talk music. I was still playing guitar and we even talked about his effects setup, since I knew I didn’t want him looking at my horrible technique. The oddest part was that he remembered my name a few years later when I ran into him in NYC. I have no idea how he did that, my name screams witness protection, and how many people does the average touring rock star meet in a year?

Yes. He played piano for us on a Christmas eve in his Moms house which was across from my Mom’s childhood house.
Met 2pac as a youth by chance before i knew who he was.

Met Hagler, Hearns and Leonard sitting around a poolside table in a dump of a joint on Lewers street and Hagler stiffed me with no tip on a Pizza.

@ttorbic It is about what I expected. This also still has micropore tape on the vent. I don’t think I would recommend it without a filter

Wow! The only thing close to this is in my life is that I got a light from Ronnie Wood when I was passing through Brick Lane once.

Also my plumber had been tight with George Harrison when he (the plumber) was a boy, he had some really interesting artifacts George had gifted him.

The most famous people I know are NFL players. I spent a year as a practice squad player. The most famous people I know from playing are Derrick Thomas and Neil Smith. I also got to meet Joe Montana and Will Shields a couple years later, since I still knew plenty of people with the organization and got field passes regularly at that point.

Why did I ever find you HBB? Your killing my bank account with your recommendations! Just got the Xenns Up in only after getting the Lava a week ago. Both phenomenal in their own ways. Now I’m looking at the Yanyin Canons too. All jokes aside thanks for your reviews. Love how explain things in more laymens terms. Keep it up so, I can keep spending money.

Having the story today is worth getting stiffed. What time period was that? I am guessing after they were done fighting, since before the mandated posturing would have prevented a civil meal, and no throw away carbs close to a fight.

I was a teenager when “The Four Kings” were fighting. Haggler lost his title during what my best friend calls it “the lost years”. I missed almost everything in 86 and 87, between some training and a long deployment. So there are events in that period that I read about after the fact, but I didn’t experience it like a typical US citizen with access to media. The odd part is that I was briefly in Honolulu in 86 for dive training, and it was the most normal part of that two year window.

Thanks for this, need to order a meter now :dancer:

Thanks for the trust. XENNS and LAVA are 2 great sets for a library like mine.
Canon are very nice in their price range.

They were all retired. Was still a trip to see them alone together in a really low level hotel that was torn down years later
