Which amps are you looking at? Most of their amps, have both a balanced and unbalanced out?
You don’t want to use an unbalanced headphone with a balanced out, whereas with for example a jot2, its ok to use it via the 6.35mm but not the xlr.
I think you are missing a the point here. A balanced amp usually has two different output, a balanced one and a single ended one. Of course you can simply plug your unbalanced headphone to the unbalanced output. That’s not a problem. The problem comes when you plug your balanced output (usually a 4 pin XLR or 4.4mm or dual 3 pin XLR) to an unbalanced headphone.
Maybe you can check stuff like the XI Audio Broadway balanced. That amp only has a balanced out. You cannot plug an unbalanced headphone to the balanced out.
Balanced head to anything = ok
Unbalanced head phone to balanced amp = Not ok?
So If I got an unbalanced amp I could use it to run my balanced argons and my unblanced dt770s?
Yes.
Yes.

A clear answer finally thank you.
So literally what I said but with a bunch of confusing messages in between
Not quite, one with a 6.35mm port would be ok, one with only xlr wouldn’t be ok
Personally in your price range though, I’d go for an unbalanced amp
I might go for the liquid spark. I know many people say you need more but It’s even listed on the site i am buying them from. Could I pair it with my fiio ek10, using the fiio as the dac only?
Something like the liquid spark or jdslabs atom would be nice for the argons
You can use the e10k as a dac, I would personally say its worth going for a €100 dac to match as it would perform better, but you can definitely use the e10k as a dac for now
Even though it’s from France i need a US to euro adapter. Is the power input the same for european and american power sockets?
For €300 the SMSL SH-9 can put out 6 watts of balanced or 3 watts of unbalanced THX-cleanness (if that’s what you’re going for)
Yes. Use it for now but save up for a dedicated the dac as it will give a slightly cleaner out.
The Spark was never made for the EU market, so be carefull the power supply of it can handle 230V!! Therefore I suggest looking at models made for the European market. Like SMSL or Topping or LakePeople or…
It might be worth asking audiophonics’ support to see what adapter is included as you would need a transformer from 110v to 230v
https://www.audiophonics.fr/en/power-plug-adapters/power-adaptator-usa-2-poles-to-fr-p-9799.html
They say
This AC adapter allows you to use US format cords on European, Schuko or French plugs.
Characteristics :
- Isolated contacts
- 2 poles
- 110V - 250V AC
- 10A
Personally I’d avoid anything SMSL/Topping as I’m really not a fan of the direction that they’ve gone in terms of sound (especially THX stuff)
It’d depend on the power supply included with the spark, if it supports 110v-250v for example then it should be ok
I’d recommend asking audiophonics’ support though since they should know more about it
It’s a simple adapter. So you still need to check if the power supply on the spark can handle 230V.
Either british or American
British (from Scotland)
I have been trying to find an amp now for so many hours it ate my entire weekend. Why is it so hard to just get something that’ll run my headphones and not worry about breaking them.
Hahaha, yeah I notice you guys need… extra sugar on everything Including audio.
@Lance THX stuff is very clean and neutral. If you’re itno that. SMSL. If not, avoid at all cost
