Finally penon decide to make a BC IEM, and a tribrid to boot!
It might be an interesting first try. Iâm not prejudiced against Penon like some dudes here.
I had the ISN H50, got very fond memories of that one. (Penon sub-brand)
Why not post in the general discussion thread if it isnât related to the thieaudio stuff?
Youâre right. I took this topic to use as a personal topic, but I shouldnât.
Thanks, much appreciated.
Picked up the Hype4 from the post today and have been listening for about two hours. Here are my thoughts in roughly the order they occurred:
- Fit is fine for my ears. ThieAudio is some of the best in the business for this imo. With the Dunu S&S tips these are glued into my ears. The initial sound was hyper-detailed. Very impressive and impactful, with a lot of extension on both ends.
- Channel matching is spot on. I donât know how they do it so well.
- My other ThieAudio IEM is the OG Monarch, and the dynamic driver implementation in those sounds like a studio-tuned subwoofer in that it doesnât add impact, just the low end octave. You donât even think itâs doing anything until you switch sets and realize the low end extension itâs contributing. That presentation feels very âsegmentedâ and also there is a sense of it being âchoked,â like the driver isnât able to move fully. These immediately feel closer to my Tia Trios in that there is a definite sense of impact and âbounce.â The two DDs are definitely doing something and I donât believe itâs a gimmick, but I also donât think itâs better than the best single DD low end, just allowing ThieAudio overcome a hurdle and catch up to their competitors.
- Ok, there is a LOT of high treble. Too much. I added a shelving filter of -5dB at 12kHz with a .7 Q, and a -3dB peak at 13.3kHz with a Q of 6. Better, but now itâs also apparent that thereâs too much harshness around 5-6kHz that is no longer masked, so I added another peak filter of -3 dB at 5600 Hz and a length node resonance correction based on sine wave sweeps. The extension is exciting on first impression but quickly becomes fatiguing, though these would be an amazing choice for someone in their late 40s and above who has some natural hearing loss at the high end (I am 25 and can hear up to around 18kHz at least)
- My other two sets in regular rotation are th OG Monarchs and the Moondrop Variations. Both of those have ESTs in the treble. the Hype4 has BAs like my Trios. I think the BA treble sounds more textured but also more fatiguing in the long term. I have 8 years of experience in audio production and engineering and I know I can hear harmonic distortion from BAs in the lower registers very clearly, so I do believe that extra 3rd and 5th harmonic energy from BAs contributes that roughness.
Overall, I am very impressed and I would enthusiastically recommend these at their price, with the caveat that they need a shelf filter on the very high end.
just saw the announcement of the thieaudio oracle mk3. the faceplate looks amazing. the driver configuration is also looking solid. hope they will be successful in capturing the magic of original oracle and learn from oracle mk2. i hope I get to try it and make a written and video review of it.
So I am really enjoying the Hype 10. I won it from HBBâs drawing and it showed up on New Years Eve. I have always enjoyed ThieAudio IEMs, but they are usually a bit out of my price range, but when you will it, problem solved !!!
The Hype 10 is a great set. It has a nice amount of bass, controls the treble, but still has all the details you really want. With so many current sets having that bass tuck, many are almost too light in the mid-bas. Not the Hype 10, it has enough mid-bass for most folks, and still avoids bass bleed. Even at high volume, it always feels controlled. I havenât had enough time with it, but it really is a great set.
