Do You Believe in Burning In Headphones?

Hmm so tl;dr

Use your shit for an ample amount of time before making a decision? Is that something we can agree on lol?

Oh JEEEs, 122 posts in 13 hours, it started slowly and now, one post after another, this topic in the forum really “burns in” at the moment

It definitely was not a slow burn.:laughing:

Speaking of which, since the topic of cables was also cut here, may I ask you a question about this topic? Can you tell me who is the person here in the forum who makes the cables that zeos mentioned recently?

Definitely

Ah, @brux at hart audio is most likely who you are thinking of. @skedra also makes some nice cables too from what I have seen

I hope you aren’t referring to the Audioquest Cinnamon Maui Wowie Zowie Hemp Cable with audiophile rock and magnets infused.:laughing:

Lololol I don’t know if it’s equivalent to that but I agree it’s more than likely all mental burn in. Not physical. It’s becoming vegetarian and believing it’s superior since you feel healthier, of course you are since u probably cut more than meat and quit junk food, smoking, cookies all the bad shit

Haha burn in is controversial enough. Let’s not get into religion

Oh Pleeeease, for my little Babys, only the best:

"$5 million in gold (shown). Why so expensive? Remarkably, the 28-inch-tall cabinet is cast in solid bronze, silver, or gold, which explains the 110-pound weight (in bronze). Add to that the 200 hours it takes to cast and hand-finish each pair at Hart’s factory on Isle of Wight.

In describing the design concept, Hart draws a parallel between the Aural Pleasure and the human ear. “To amplify sound at the cochlea, three bones vibrate a window in the inner ear. This amp- lification is re-created by the cabinet being entirely silent. It is so solid and inert that almost all of the energy from the drive unit enters the room instead of being used to vibrate, resonate, or excite a wooden cabinet. The result is super-efficient, clean sound without any cabinet noise.”

England’s Hi-Fi Choice wrote, “The fact that it can do things that no other speaker can—and in such a musically cohesive manner—makes it addictive.” For Hart, the sound is “all about the bass” even though the 8-inch Tannoy dual-concentric woofer/tweeter driver peters out below 39 hertz (it’s paired with a Vifa supertweeter). “I used to struggle with why upper frequencies were always sacrificed when producing a lot of bass. It occurred to me that the bass was exciting the wood of the cabinets and creating unwanted noise. Now when I listen, I have the clarity of the bass that I always wanted, and it’s nirvana.”

There’s different ways to measure things, in that situation you probably want to use the same headphone and then measure its frequency response of the sound coming out to see if it’s got more bass. There’s more to EVERYTHING. To say that science is faulty is to refuse everything. And btw science shouldn’t be talked about as a Bible, it’s closer to studying patterns. Based on patterns if there’s electricity going into your amp, it will probably turn on. That’s science

Precisely why cheapo headphones are the prime candidates for mechanical break-in (not burn-in, that’s electronic). Also why tests of this hypothesis with high-end headphones from the best manufacturers are missing the point. This is a hypothesis to be tested with the likes of Superlux before you touch anything like AKG or Sennheiser etc.

Only thing I’m not clear on is if (and why) planars would have any special susceptibility to it. For now I will continue to firmly believe in audible break-in only for cheap dynamic headphones (and subwoofers).

The tension and excursion will change with use with planars. Same thing kinda what bagwell said with mylar. Really depends on the headphone if it is significant

If I burn in my 2K monitor long enough with magic rocks and crystals, will it eventually become an 8K monitor? How does one go about burning in body parts for better performance?Asking for a friend (I swear!).:smile::laughing::smile:

And now that you mention it, maybe sheer driver size is also a big predictor of whether you will get changes from break-in.

That doesn’t explain anything specific to planars, you could say that about any speaker.

The membrane/diaphragm of the planar will exhibit these changes. This can be fairly drastic if they are new drivers not tested much. This is prob why the 4xx has a decent burn in period because hifiman just rushes them out without giving them proper testing most of the time in traditional hifiman fashion. Higher end models or manufactures will get/give more care in these respects and it’s already going to have plenty of time for the driver to burn in with their testing

This I completely agree with. Burn in is really hard to dispute with speakers (and tubes, but for different reasons). Size and material definitely matters when it comes to drivers and possible audible changes with burn in.

Yeah, the larger the driver the more there is to move, makes sense to me lol

Also typically estats have the least amount of burn in to me, prob because of the design. The only real changes might be a bit of difference for bass but typically they sound the same day 1 and day 60 so it doesn’t really matter. Prob a combination of good qc since they are a higher end headphone typically and because estats lol.

People have told me that estat burn in is a thing mechanically, and I would prob agree with them that it exists, but it’s not really audible most of the time or it’s so subtle you wouldn’t notice it. Mental burn in on estats is huge tho because it can be overwhelming with the speed and detail, along with unusual presentation and strange timbre, so that imo would make it extremely hard to notice burn in as well if it did change the headphones significantly
