Could be one of 2 things, not enough power or its not a usb 3.0 cable
As far as usb 3 its fairly easy to check, is the inside of the usb blue? (and of course is it the same shape as the OG)
Power is a little more trick since its due to the lenght of the cable - the longer the lower the signal/power, so if a cable is like 9 feet long it might have an issue without a repeater (6 should be fine but it might be a bit picky)
