@A_COC0NUT The GW100 is a bigger pad with different design. I donāt think the Geekria pads will fit. I can try here in a few and report back. The only pads I know of for replacements right now are the stock ones.
That is quite a lot bigger. Oh well. At least they sound good in wireless mode.
I would say if you loosen the headband itās good in imaging and more relaxed but if you tighten the headband the low end and treble is more present but imaging is kinda messy.
Thizguy00 Thanks Iāll have to play around with them when they get here next week!
I upgraded to GW100 from my post-2009 Alessandro Musical Series MS-1 (factory tuned low-end Grados). I had G-cushions on them and couldnāt live without, so I installed a set of aftermarket G-cushions on GW100 too. The foam stretches, so it fits and stays in place. Donāt be discouraged by the inner foam diameter, you can fit a G-cushion with zero drama. The stock foam pads, sitting on ears had a tingling sensation with deep, long and punchy base. G-cushions solved that and added comfort. I swapped cushions after a few tracks, so I canāt comment on how it affected the stage and etc. I like the way it is now. I had this slight nausea at the beginning, either because I listened to a variety to bass-heavy music to test the headphones or I had to get used to it, but after a couple of weeks, thatās gone. Iām not crazy about deep deep base because it costs mid-range and treble in some headphones, but GW100 actually manages incredibly well. 3.5mm jack does the work when you just want to watch YouTube or do random stuff on computer and not have a BT 5.0 signaling at point blank to your brain, and itās OK. I use KOSS KPH30iās for that purpose though. GW100 on BT delivers detail as itās pushing low frequency awesomeness, and that I think is worth $250 easily. If I tested these and the price was $500, Iād cough up that too, since you donāt need a DAC and/or a headphone amp.
For the record, I have the updated version.
What BT audio codec are you all using?
Iām playing from a samsung phone that defaults to Aptx and I was thinking they sounded pretty thin in the low end. I EQed them for stronger bass and was fairly happy but then I tried switching to AAC. Whoa, way more bass. Deeper sound.
I find this strange because the two codecs are supposed to be comparable in sound quality. Could it be that the onboard DSP only works with the AAC codec?
thatās interesting. did you search Google to see if others experienced anything similar in changing from Aptx to AAC or visa versa?
I didnt really find anything like that, which tells me that either there is something specifically amiss with my samsung phoneās ability to stream aptx, or that the GW100s DSP only communicates with AAC.
It would explain the differing opinions on the sound quality of the GW100s (some preferring wireless, others wired).
Iām just wondering if anyone here can feel the DSP effect with aptx selected.
I received a message back from Grado saying that the dsp should work with all supported BT audio codecs. Iāll have to try some other devices to see if I can hear a difference with aptx.
Itās kind of a pain because I have to go into the developer options and switch to AAC every time I connect the headphones in order to hear bassā¦
Some Samsung phones got⦠weird⦠audio settings. And these settings donāt only apply to the (integrated) speakers. Maybe this is not set to āflatā but ārockā or whatever it is.
Maybe try another music player, too.
I realized that the AAC was actually way darker than it ought to be, coloring the sound, and just kept it on Aptx.
Long story, but I modded these with Shipibo audio parts. It was really difficult to fit the electronics and the result isnāt perfect but Iām happy with them.
Like the poster above, I am floored by the sound with the $5 ebay G pads. No bass loss whatsoever, and all the positive characteristics you normally hear about G pads are here. Amazing improvement over the stock S pads.
I have some TTVJ Deluxe flat pads on the way to try, but theyll have to be amazing to beat the Gs.
Did you have to modify the cups to fit the buttons or does Shipibo come with them already cut out?
Yes, the left side cup had to be milled out to an extreme degree, as well as the circuit board trimmed down as far as possible. To anyone else wanting to try this I strongly recommend measuring the pcb first and getting larger custom cups (which might in turn cause the other hardware to need resizing), and holes for the buttons precut.
Can someone please provide a link to the $5 Ebay G cushions?
The current ones are uncomfortable and make my ears ātingleā.
They just bumped up the price to $8, still a good deal. Be aware they will probably take a month to reach you. There might be some amazon G pads with faster shipping options.
I received the TTVJ Deluxe flat pads yesterday. They do sound good. They have solid bass and a very direct, punchy sound. Being the smallest, they make the phones more portable but are probably the least comfortable of the pads Iāve tried. Given the $50 price, I cant recommend them for the GW100s.
I also received some ebay L pads, and they are the worst of the three. They have a distinctively light sound. Great clarity and the most transparent mids and treble, but bass is noticeably reduced for some reason, too much for my liking.
The ebay G pads are far and away the best, to my ear. Much more articulate and atmospheric. I guess there is a bit of a mid-scoop effect going on. They sound a bit hollower than the others, but not in a bad way. They take these headphones from good to incredible.
Thanks for sharing!
Unfortunately, they donāt ship to Canada.
These look similarā¦
