MQA is tearing us apart Lisa!

Ok I’ve merged these two threads hopefully keeping things focused on the topic :+1:

I would say the only way this would be true is one of three possibilities…

  1. You have headphones/IEM’s with a rolled off top end
  2. You have loudspeakers with a rolled off top end
  3. Your ears have a rolled off top end

My point being that Tidal has a slight brittle, crunchy, “raw” less refined sound to it on the top end. Qobuz on the other hand sounds refined, even borderline silky by comparison.

Other than that, they sound mostly alike, except for of course MQA which just sounds off by any comparison.

i think i get what you mean but i don’t see a problem with that as long as it does not affect and disrupt the people around them, however i do believe this does become an issue when people write simply to insert their ego over trying to have a thoughtful and thoughtprovoking engagement that encourages others to take part in good will, seems like this varies from place to place quite a bit. what’s really helped me is not being a dick, being open and self critical helps. i think that likes are nice but critical engagement that encorages thinking is even better

the sideefects that the world wide web has is that it becomes very easy just to insert your ego in a very toxic way without any thought going into what is being written or consequense on your position in the social hierarchy which is what you would see change with someone always being strong opinionated and pushing their ego in the real world, it’s encouraged by the nature of the internet itself, im very happy with this forum as i’ve found it to be particularly laid back.

there may very well be more to it than what i seem to have touch3ed on but these are my initial thoughts on it

TLDR- i agree. the internet gives people that are generally unpleasant an outlet to socialise freely, bad things are going to happen, bad people makes bad things happen and integrities will be broken

Shieet I’m sitting here happy with spotify quality lol. Also ‘thehonestaudiophile’ needs to take a breath every now and again, he sounds like he is playing at 1.5 speed in the video.

I’ve never heard MQA, DSD, Dirac or any other fancy mumbo jumbo whizbang stuff… I’m simple I rip cds to lossless (Wav/FLAC) and I listen to vinyl. I don’t stream and no high res stuff.

i don’t know man, if thats what you think about the community as a whole i feel sorry for you, i can’t say i join you in the idea that everyone in the community is that way, i think there are a lot of knowledgable people in the community, people just need to be willing to have a discussion and an urge to learn and understand and some definitely do that, and others definitely not!

i don’t mean to mince your words but i really felt i had to reply black on white here

Interesting point. But I’m not sure it can do that. MQA isn’t exactly encryption. It’s just a proprietary format that a very small number of people care about. If a larger portion of the population at large cared about hires music I suspect we would see free tools pop up quickly to break MQA and turn it into a nonproprietary format. I guess it’s a way to slow down unauthorized distribution. But Spotify and Netflix more than proved that the best strategy for anti-piracy is a high quality service at a reasonable price. And Spotify HD will do this again if they keep the quality high.

Yes! His last few videos sound this way. What happened? I like most of his stuff, but I just cringed with the ugly background, clearly read script, and 1.5x speed. Hard to appreciate his actual points with so many distractions.

But it’s so much more fun to just jump to conclusions. I have a dedicated mat for that:

Yep same, I demo new things on spotify 320 and if I like them I get them in lossless on my NAS.

Exactly, nonsense is best sense! As long as it doesn’t come as serious accusations.

and i’m very thankful for that! Yeah, i might have been a bit dramatic there, but there are a lot of "IF"s and "MIGHT"s there, i use these for a reason lol

From my limited experience in public speaking, it is most likely from reading directly off the script instead of using bullet points and taking natural pauses to let the points sink in. The result is a lot of information pounded into your brain with little impact.

i think he put himself under a lot of pressure in this one, which is quite understandable.

yap, i getcha, i often catch myself not doing enough of it, we don’t talk verbally like this as much but it makes us easier to understand over text i feel like, mainly because we can’t talk with our faces and bodies on here, as much :cat:

This was my experience in extensive testing of Tidal and Qobuz, too. Qobuz just sounded better.

Meaning that an s/w unfolded and loopback recorded file is imprinted with MQA “signature” so it can be proven as pirated. The idea that it’s for stream only and if you record it it will be easily identifiable as pirated if resold.

Got it, yes. I see your point.

what pirate site do you use?

 I love how everyone’s showing up to +1 that in the comments: Zeos, DMS, Metal, Resolve, Currawong is even mentioned in the video… it’s like everyone who knows anything about how things should sound thinks MQA sucks and this needs to be made known.
