Depends on the recordingâŠhow well its micâs. One mic, two mics, three mics etcâŠand then the mixingâŠI have many recordings with different cans that exhibit more than these âthree blobsâ you speak aboutâŠ
IMO there is so much crap recordings that often contribute to this âthree blobâ thingâŠas a critical listener I often skip over songs that are just âmehâ âŠand gosh my standards lately are really very narrow focused. Once you here a really well done songâŠits hard to tolerate the meh" stuffâŠ
This is all tempered with my mood, time of day, and I hungry, is the coffee fresh, amount of alcohol consumed etcâŠ
When I evaluate I tend to listen to stellar recordings - Chesky, Mapleshade, Doug Sax, Steven Wilson, etc.
My HE-6se v1 and HD-600 do not have good soundstages.
My modded HE-500 and HEX v2 for sure do.
The HD-600 on an OTL tube (overbuilt BHCs) has 5 distinct areas across the stage that are somewhat connected but not like a large regular rectangle youâd get from excellent speakers. These 5 areas much cleaner and more satisfying than the 3 blobs.
far left - intermediate - C E N T E R - intermediate - far right.
the drawback is that the intermediate area closest to CENTER is deeper than the CENTER plane, but the intermediate closest to far *** sticks out a bit from the main plane. Its a shift of maybe 15 degrees, its consistent on my BHCs. It is not that annoying, but a matter of interest.
Yes acoustics is a very interesting topicâŠSoooo many variables hereâŠ
The physical venue, structure of the recording event is important and can influence the sound.
The placement of instruments, and band members is important and can influence the sound.
The placement of the recording microphones is important and can influence the sound.
The mixing of these mic inputs, the levels, eqâing is important and can influence the sound.
The transfer and sampling (usually upwards), bit depth, algorithms is important and can influence the sound.
Then there is your stuff, pc, file format, downstream adjustments, the dac, amp, headphones and YOU.
YOU consists of your experiences, bias, likes and dislikes, mental state, shape of your ear canal etc.
What I am trying to say is when looking at the soundstage your experiencing with a set of headphones and even a normal stereo setupâŠthe way the music was recorded, where the mics are, the people are etc can have a profound influence on your experience and conclusions.
If a band is micâd poorlyâŠ(lack of experience or experimentation etc) these discovered issues can be attempted to correct to some degree via level controls in the mixing console. Better to re-do the mic placement to get the âsoundâ you want vs trying to fix stuff that was done poorly in the first place.
So many things here can influence your thinking of how a set of headphones are reproducing stuffâŠ
It was a kit that was never built for $350. I upgraded it a lot: caps, transistors, etc. about $450 more, have some nice tubes too for another $400. The other one I know is strictly stock. Mine is maybe 10% better.
Hi Guys I Need your help.
I have to purchase an Headphone Amplifier to pair HD600.
I have decide if Going for a model with XLR output or NOT.
HD600 with a FULL balanced Setup Is Better than SE setup?
My choice Is Lake People G111 but There are no XLR output.
It has only XLR input.
I can use HD600 only in unbalanced configuration even of I Have a DAC with XLR output.
