Spotify - Tidal - How do you get your Music?

Agree with you on MQA, especially when Qobuz sounds better than Tidal without it.

GoldenSound’s epic takedown of MQA and Tidal illuminated me.

Me, too. Sorry to all for the minor thread derail, but I enjoyed this discussion, @Raptor168!

Copy. I watched it a couple of times because some of it goes pretty deep, and I wanted to be sure I was getting it!

Removing your music as a protest against a platform hosting someone is standing by your principles.

Threatening a platform that you’re going to remove your music unless they silence someone else makes you an asshole.

I am going to guess that most fans of Neil Young understand him, and his politics, they have been consistent since long before I was born. I suspect that most people who actually care about his music are going to be fine with this, or need to have a reckoning about what both Young and Rogan are about.

The fact that Rogan is Spotify’s number 1 podcaster doesn’t influence my view of this, I don’t listen to him, and don’t get the appeal. If that is the audience they want to cater to, it is a free market, and they can choose to do so.

Spotify made the decision that seemed like best monetary decision for them, and Young made the decision that seemed principled and his record label ( who co-owns his music ) backed him up.

Neil Young has a fairly impressive library on YouTube Music, but that caps at 256kbps AAC. The only glaring classic rock hole on YTMusic is Hendrix, but you can upload recordings.

I use YouTube Music most of the time during my workday, since it is part of YouTube Premium. The 5 person family plan only costs $18/mo, and is commercial free YouTube and their Music service.

Not to get to political, but here is my take…

Spotify should not really be a political platform, but then again so much music is political that it is impossible to avoid. So why does a podcast differ from music? it doesn’t really.

As i’m for free speech, i think banning a podcast really is not the solution, but one have to draw a line when wrongful information gets harmfull, at least on such “popular” platforms that cater for people in all ages.

Not having listened to Joe Rogans podcasts, i can’t really tell if he has crossed that line, although Neil Young certainly think so

Then I guess Neil stood tall. All of his music was removed.

Apparently so do 1000 doctors and what not, allegedly most of them aren’t even doctors. But the reason why those episodes are staying up is so that each person can listen and make their own decision, instead of just outright removing it, like FB or Alphabet would. Stunts like these probably bring more publicity and more people question why they don’t want you to know what they are talking about in there. Which drives the numbers up even more. I might be wrong but the episode in question should be the most watched/listened to episode on Spotify ever.

I personally don’t think it’s the right decision. First of all as I understand, he doesn’t even own his music, so who is making the decision? Him or is he just a mouthpiece for the people who own his music? And at the end of the day your fans are the ones get hurt the most, even if he has only 6M plays. And he didn’t stand tall IMO, he has removed his tweets, which means he probably realized it was a mistake and removed them. But the damage was already done and Spotify deleted the tracks.

“They can have Neil Young or Rogan. Not Both.”

Asshole.

The “deleted” thing was a draft version of the public post that he published the following day, on his website. This is a 76 year old, so I am not shocked that is his primary internet presence. He has three tweets on that account in its existence, so I doubt it was used at all in this.

He owns a minority portion of his music, and the split is with Warner and Reprise, and they backed him up on this, so clearly they didn’t have a problem with his position on it.

Alright, fair enough.

Yes, 100 per cent. I visit YT Music on occasion as well and enjoy many of their playlists. I think the quality of the stream is very nice.

Joe Rogan should have Neil Young on his show.

Sometimes I want to SEE the musicians perform on YT, even tho I can get better quality
on Spotify or AMHD. Thus things like Tiny Desk Concerts, etc. I especially enjoy orchestra performances like Concertgebouworkest from Amsterdam, and sometimes watch them on YT tv with a coax cable run to my dac! Fun!

wouldn’t that mean it will not be on spotify then?

Exactly. A good amount of the classical I listen to is on YouTube for the same reasons. I enjoy watching the performance as well. Adds a completely different dimension to it. And frankly the sound is pretty good for much of it. I enjoy it very much.

Great advertising for neil young hes known for audiophile recordings aint he ? Not a fan of spodify as a streamer. Respect the musician for standing by his views spodify is a buisness not FCC regulated so he took his ball and left. Thats cool.

Joe rogan is a self professed moron and i believe him. Listened to every episode until he got his spodify deal. Entertainers are not going to help with a plumbing problem. Maybe as background noise while ripping out the toilet.

Joni mitchell asked to be taken off of spodify.

This is the best place to buy music that I know of. Lots of old and rare music for sale I’ve never found anywhere else.

It’s no all MP3 music. They have a ton of FLAC.
