So I own the 560S and 6xx. I was going to complete the family by grabbing the 58X but then came across the 660S and DT1990. Trying to debate between the two and if it’s even worth getting any other Senn if I own the 560S and 6XX?
As you already have 6xx, DT1990 seems like a better choices…
I think the DT 1990 is around 600? For a little more, I would recommend the Focal Elex. Or go cheaper and try a planner (Sundara for 350).
You can pick up an elex on drop for $600 now. I’d go that route before the dt1990, but it’s all preference.
If you have the 6xx I’d skip the 660s. Again all preference tho.
Fully agree the Elex/Clear is like a super 6XX.
The elex to me is the deal of the decade. its incredible the value. Build is TOP notch
As someone who owns 6xx, 600 and 58x: I think it is a bit excessive and duplicative.
If you’re curious, I’d diversify into other families of cans.
I got mine for the right price, but if I was paying “normal” pricing:
The 58x are very worth having because they’re a good price, they’re easier to power and have a bit fuller low-end that fuels “other” genres well outside of the normal things I turn to HD-6__ fam for.
Gun to my head to keep only one, I keep the 600’s. These are small differences though. In a cash-limited world I would sooner have someone try Sundara or something else.
Personally I wouldn’t call the Elex (and definitely not the Clear) a super 6XX, or any headphone. If you want a super 6XX, get good source gear.
But I agree Elex is a solid choice to have a taste of what higher tier headphones can do.
If OP wants to complete a Senn family, I’d look at 600 or 580 rather than 660S which is pretty mediocre imo. Whether it’s worth it is up to you though, they all sound similar but different.
DT1990 also gives you a different taste for a brighter leaner sound, but might be a bit expensive when you can get a DT880 or DT177x Go as the latter two have a bit more character.
I honestly couldn’t imagine the 1990 being a worse headphone for anything else other than professional work. I understand this headphone is great. But dear lord. Talk about sharp. 90% work 10% enjoyment.
The 6XX is a fundamentally enjoyable headphone and the 560s also enjoyable in a neutral forward way.
The 177x/1770 is a V shaped bass cannon. Really a different headphone altogether.
If you really do want something that fills in the stage and well improved imaging. Fill in bass and retains the mid range forward magic the Elex is probably the best bet.
The HD600 isn’t a step up its a slightly different take on the 6__ sound. It’s not worth it considering OP owns the best of the senn line anyway.
It’s probably better to step up than to step to the side at this point
No it isn’t and it’s similar. But if OP wants to complete the Senn lineup I personally think 600 is a better choice than 660S. Also not sure if I agree 6XX is the best of the Senn line
But I agree spending the money on an upgrade would bring the most noticeably change, but there are many out there who are happy to collect a few similar sounding headphones and I don’t know if OP is one of them
Probably right on the HD600 than 660s…its such a minor difference… Its not worth it. If you really want to get more out of the experience grab a Darkvoice 336se
