A/V Receiver thread

Got to rewatch daily hifi episodes with the AURO guy to refresh the concept behind the format.

That room DTS:X uses was clearly made by a unmarred man with autism, I’d love to sit in it and watch a movie, or play a game.

I have a floor channel, purely because that’s where it would fit, I used some rigid foam insulation super glued together to angle it up at me.

Gene (audioholics) is posting on youtube.
The yamaha A6A signal voltage 6 rvms RCA and 8vms through XLR.

Some good measured reports.

Disney+ is IMO the best streaming service at the moment, especially outside the US, there’s so much 4k HDR content on it and on Star.

Now are we going to get IMAX enhanced audio and will it be the theater mix.

Audioholics released the first reviewer test findings. Merry christmas all.

Jesus, what a monster! That thing won’t fit in most entertainment furniture.

Man not sure if i should go denon instead.

Marantz (denon) is always a good option with bit more newer/better components.

Its a lost year for AVRs, the denon X1700 i believe got 3 8k HDMI ports with the 1440 fix.

Denon/marantz fixed the HDMI issue but used lower measuring DACs due to the chip shortage.

The Yamaha A6A is great at being a 2ch AVR and will pass 8k-4k at 24hz.

The pioneer can do 5.1.4 and comes with DIRAC and pioneers home brew room correction. Interesting.

Zs atmos review.

I watched that whole video, I think Zeos came off as F-ing idiot, he didn’t even bother to read the Dolby set up guidelines. Tying to set up a system with only rear and middle ATMOS speakers, then coming to the conclusion that you have to have 6 ATMOS speakers to have middle speakers, while this is true it’s totally wrong. the majority of ATMOS systems have 4 height speakers 2 in the rear and 2 in the front at a 45 degree angle 30 degrees apart from each other, this creates the “ATMOS bubble of sound”. You only need the top middle speakers if you have multiple rows of seats and the gap between the front and the rear speakers is too wide. You could go with a 7.1.2 system and only have the top middle, but that won’t give you any movement in the height channels it won’t sound like stuff is flying over you, it’ll just be above you. This video is full of misinformation and just plain bad advice.

If your really interested in setting up a ATMOS system go and find videos by people who know what they are talking about Home Theater Gurus has very technical well thought out and explained content that will teach you how to do it right. I’d also recommend Audioholics and Techno Dad. with Techno Dad being the most beginner friendly.

This is my room using the same speakers Zeos used in a 5.2.4 or 10.1 AURO with the top middle (ATMOS won’t use the VOG speaker), notice the angles I have the speakers at, I used a Laser level to get them at the correct 45 degree angle 30 degrees apart from each other pointing at my MLP.

(yes I know Auro says to place them at 30 degrees I tried that and this sounds way better at 45 degrees. 30 degrees just sounds like stuff is slightly higher on the wall, and doesn’t feel like stuff is flying over your head you really don’t even notice it if you aren’t listening for it, its very meh.)

If you actually want to learn how to set up a ATMOS system correctly.

Haven’t looked the video but i did see setup on Stream and…
well i had thought how it will go down. From the writing as i suspected.

The aiming and angles is bit easier with powered speakers since they are more “precision sound” you aim/point the speakers directly MLP area.
Laser pointer with distance measurement is a suberb tool to have.

I have a construction company, so I own a few precision measurement tools. But you can do it with a very cheap digital degree finder with a laser on it.

Hes not invested in ATMOS thats cool although he does have atmos in his home theater just needs the receiver and bed channels.

This is cracking me up, because I am reading this and seeing these really cool new solutions, and here I am, still rocking this thing!

I have no idea what came over this amp, it seemed like it was dying on me. But since I took it out of the living room and reconfigured it for 2-channel, basically just using it more for music than trying to carry the home theater load, it has completely changed. It’s now this audio piece that has beastly power (140W per when configured for 2-channel operation) but it’s incredibly smooth, very organic and life-like in it’s presentation - with limitless power! The surround and signal processing capabilities are very impressive given it’s age. Or, I simply go to direct mode and let the equalizer handle it. The headphone circuit is brilliant. I am confident this amp will power any headphone you can throw at it. I have the Elegia connected and it’s incredible.

And it’s fun to operate this rig! You energize it and it does its dance - clicks and relays and such - Takes about 10 seconds to initialize. And then operating the controls. Everything has this luxurious feel to it. Operating the sliders of the EQ to lock in your sound - it’s so freakin old school! I guess that is why I’m getting such a kick out of it. And then to have the bonus of it sounding as good as it does - fantastic. I should acknowledge the M200 DAC as well. It’s doing a fine job. I’m really diggin the AKM chip now, too. It has been a great addition.

But really, who knew an old A/V receiver could be such a killer amp. I’ll take it, man!
