So, I currently have a pair of HD 6xx’s and I’m wanting to get a dac/amp to upgrade from my motherboard audio. The idea I currently have is too get the ifi ZEN dac and a balanced cable for the 6xx’s. Is this a good idea or would I be better of putting the cable money into a better dac/amp, if so is there any good options in the $180- $230 price range?

Probably not a bad option, but you could also do something like a Schiit Modi 3+/Magni 3+ stack, or swap the Magni for a Vali 2+ if you’re in a location with access to Schiit. Liquid Spark stack would also be nice. Both of those options would not require picking up a balanced cable.

If you can stretch you budget you’ll pick up more features with a SMSL M500 for $400, no balance cable required. You’ll have bluetooth to connect your phone easily.
