I tried to figure out if AKG still produces the K712 in Slovakia or if its been moved to China and got some conflicting information about it. I did hear that someone received a slovakian-made k712 from a chinese seller, so I think Iāll order it and check the serial number. Do you know how I could go about validating the serial number?
To be honest, I donāt know. AKG warranty is only activated when needed. My guess is you could contact them with the number, saying you want to verify if you got a original or a copy/clone of some sort.
Also, FYI, I donāt care of something is made in China, Cambodia or the Moon. If they kept the sound, a.k.a the same parts and the same assembly process, for me itās fine.
I donāt care where its made either, if AKG made it in China to the same sound standards as they made the originals that would be fine by me(OG AKG was basically killed by samsung anyway). My issue is I kind of doubt some fake one made in china by a third party would be made to the same standards as real ones, and Iām new to the hobby so I donāt think I could discern whether a sound issue was caused by my setup, the headphones being fake, or an issue I personally have with the sound signature.
Thatās a very fair point. I think contacting AKG would be the only way to guarantee itās not a fraud. In any case, IMO, the K712 sound great even when underpowered. You may loose some detail but not much from what I heard. Most of the loose is volume, and basically any descent powered amp (more than 0.5W into 32ohms) should do for them.
If this is a disposable income, that you donāt care if you ended up ālosingā, I think itās worth a try. Plus eBay can usually protect the costumer if you can prove itās fake. I would buy and email AKG with the serial number to get confirmation. If they say itās fake, this should be enough for eBay money back guarantee.
I just checked and the seller also has 30 day returns, so I think Iāll be fine no matter what. Hopefully that also bodes well for its authenticity.
A part of āOG AKGā lives on in Austrian Audio
They really ājust goā compared to some headphones.
I heard about Austrian Audio. Happy they landed on their feet.
My recommendation for the K712 pros are with Yaxi comfort pads + removal of driver dampening foams
They are now more comfortable and sweet sounding
You can thank you later.
Hey there, Did you pull the trigger on those K712 on ebay? If so any feedback?
Yeah I did. They seem genuine, I sent the serial number to AKG and they said it was in the right format(but that they didnāt have a record of the serial number, which is apparently pretty common, most people donāt register theirs). The pads are the right size and material, the bits that connect the adjusters that have the AKG insignia on it are made of metal, the headband creates a hotspot on the top of my head(many have complained about this issue). It also does this thing where the pads want to bend inward such that the bottom of one pad rests on the middle of the other one(Iāve seen this behavior in reviews on youtube). Big issue was that when it came out of the package, the foam was all put on top of the product in the box, and it smelled weirdly like metal. I suspect that because it was shipped internationally ebay international processing mishandled it, luckily the smell went away after being aired out for a few days.
