It does carry sound. But a displayport mst splitter still wouldn’t help because the PC would still be detecting two separate displays. It’s not really different from using multiple outputs on the gpu

Haven’t tested really but what DP version you would need use for Atmos surround or more speakers or is it even possible? Could you run like 5.2.4 surround from DP ?
Atleast HDMI 2.1 supports pretty much anything you want.
I would trust DP for the image part… not so much audio.
While DisplayPort doesn’t support passthrough, v1.4 supports up to 32 PCM audio channels… so it’s technically possible but there’s no reason you’d want to do that.
But DisplayPort can converted to full HDMI 2.0, so that’s a good option if your GPU only has one HDMI output. Passthrough worked with my 1080ti at least. Though I had to manually enable it when I tested it with LAV
