Great news, lads! The Preamp has arrived. Got here early evening last night. Of course, I woke up this morning very excited to get it installed. After a cup o’ Joe to shake off the cobwebs, I gave it a good think as to how it should go and went to work.
First, here she is. The build is exceptional. This is truly a quality piece. Front to back, the amazing machining done on the case, the connectors on the back, the feel of the knobs, everything is top notch. Even the remote is nice. It’s beautiful in its simplicity.
Here is how the layout shaped up. I wanted to make this the centerpiece of the system while making good use of the space. I think it looks really good. I was going to remove the SA-1, but I thought “why do that? It’s still a good headphone amp.” So it stayed. Of course, Arthur has to get his mug in there!
And here is the user side. The DA-9 that I use to drive the Horizon Closed Carbons moved over to this side and created a triple stack. This is a secondary system that runs completely independent of the main system, mainly used for IEMs and certain headphones via the SH-9. I am still amazed at how good the SU-8 DAC is. It may be old, but it still works a treat.
So how does the Ladder Bach II Preamp sound? It blew me away right out of the gate. It’s absolutely sublime. When I compare it to the acting preamp that was in this system, The Singxer SA-1, there is really no comparison. Don’t get me wrong, the SA-1 did a really fine job as a preamp, but it was not necessarily designed to be a preamp. The Bach II delivers a ZERO noise, crystal clear presentation. Channel balance is perfect at every volume setting, which is something the SA-1 struggled with a bit. The sound stage is huge; separation is incredible in that each instrument and singer has their place and there is room around it/them. Dynamic range is outstanding, which is important for classical selections where there are such drastic swings in loudness between soft passages and gigantic crescendos. Vocals have come slightly more forward, too, which is great for me because of my hearing challenges. I couldn’t be happier with this piece, and I suspect as it settles in it might get even better!
So, I guess this answers the question… Do you really need a preamp? YOU ABSOLUTELY FUCKING DO! I am totally set now, and actually have room to grow, should I decide to add a streamer. Money well spent, indeed. 
After all that hard work, I decided to reward myself with a gourmet lunch. Slow cooked pork ribs with baby potatoes, a bowl of Kathy’s special homemade gravy on the side, which I swear to God could be a food group all by itself, and a Shiner Boch, the official premium beer of Texas! Doesn’t get any better.
