I have tried the Edition XS, and I like em. It is pretty good, has amazing subbass extension and exciting treble. However… I don’t think they can do the 808 Bass drops with authority. If you are still okay with that, you should check them out. I’ve come across people with build quality issues, so there’s that.
one of the most memorable tracks I’ve tested on them is Polyphia’s Playing God.
Bass quality over amplitude every time. Basshead doesn’t mean “hate sound quality “ closed back DD w 40mm driver and a low quality one at that, just handicapped the 270. It’s not basshead it’s bassy and sloppy
unlike the HD6 series, this thing got zero roll off, Amazing extension, also the pads are huge, it was kind of a loose fit for me around the head. Was almost entirely relying on the clamp for it.
Edit: I recommended Sundara a day or two back… the extension is not that great… Should have not recommended them. Good thing I asked the dude to try it first before deciding.
I’m not into the market for Headphones right now, so I haven’t been into demoing stuff for a while. I did hear about Edition XV, but no one around me got them so I can’t say much without Demoing. Was also pretty interested in it cos of the Naming scheme. Also i’m not against brightness, I do like a bit of a V signature, very clean V if possible.
The XV are probably the least detailed Hifiman planar I’ve ever heard out of the box and it’s not just a subdued treble thing, they beat Sennheiser at their own veil. I’d actually love for someone with functioning ears to get their hands on the XV and give me some god damn validation on hating those things lol. Super capable driver and with EQ they’re a kick ass set, but stock tuning has this like lower mids bump and they don’t have enough ear gain to get out of the mud and even with it, they’d sound veiled. The newer HE600 are my absolute go to rec. With a proper pad swap, they’re scary close to the Susvara Unveiled and with a dealer they’re like $420 new.
I’ve heard the XS and the post 10k is a lil fatiguing after like 1-2 hrs for me when I listen to metal. (Not my personal unit) (The cymbal crashes get a lil much in tracks like painkiller)
Also iirc you’ve mentioned that you’re sensitive to 5-6K frequency… So yeah
I mean, it’s probably worth just to get to have a reference for all the other reviewers stances on it if that matters, I guess. I think the dealer I was talking to put it at $215 new. For $215, with some EQ, and if you don’t have chimp ears like I do, its probably a really solid option but in stock form it has too much wrong for me to ignore and one of the things is no mesh over the metal grills and my big ol ears touch super easy and it’s pretty annoying. Idk why they decided to change the pad structure for no reason but it immediately made it impossible to swap to my custom pads and fix the problem with depth (and bass).
I just remembered I think the headphones.com guys ranked it like best headphone of the year or something. Literal joke to me but also an important reason for comparison.
Beyers seem to a very marmite brand and I do wonder who voices them cos they seem all over the place SQ wise across their range.
Try and get a listen to the HiFiman Sundara. I recently picked up a pair and they hold up amazingly well against my more expensive sets. A bit of a bargain now too. An oldy but still a goodie.
