Bad Guy Good Audio Rankings and stuff (under construction) (Part 1)

Nice! I have to sell some stuff off before I can gather funds so a week or two is perfect

when are these getting released? also hows the size compared to the kinda lava, while the lavas do fit me they are still a big shell for my ears.

I found vocals on the Mele to be slightly too dark/recessed (not sure which word would be correct here). Looking at the charts, the Kai and the Mahina seem to be similar and maybe even dip a little more in the upper mids/treble. Could I reasonably expect vocals to be darker/more recessed on these two sets vs the Mele?

Just for context: the KPH30i were total trash for me just because i couldnā€™t deal with the vocals sounding like they came through from another room. HD660s wasnā€™t as bad, but I didnā€™t like it for the same reasons

(edited for typs)

I donā€™t think so.
Itā€™s not being sent and I just learned about it with your post :ok_hand:

Thatā€™s Grace Slicks isolated vocals from ā€œWhite Rabbitā€
Cursor held over the highest point in her range on that track
Right panel is showing fundamental and harmonic extensions about where they should be.
Really lines up with 'ear gain" and visuals how in a lot of cases playing with gain is putting vocals in or away from your face (so to speak).
Itā€™s software and not a persons opinion (including mine). If there is sound the software shows it.

Some folks think the EJ07M is too intense with vocals.
the intensity isnā€™t dependent on post 10Khz 10th+ order harmonics and the graphs are not to be taken as gospel beyond those points anyway.

You can see the harmonics peaking at around 7.5Khz and then falling away.
Why i think sets with exaggerated post 8Khz graphs (taken with grain of salt) sound oddly intense since they are treating the replay with an emphasis not matching the human voiceā€¦or ear catching it.

Try sets like Variations with a mt at 3khz (watch out for midbass tuckā€¦it is clear to the ear) as that might match your preference better that the tuning i find more natural.

Cymbals, and lots of instruments can and are impacted by upper harmonic cuts and suppression.
Vocals, not so much depending on singer and recording. I have a Hatsune miku track which is a computer generated voice. I expected that to have a lot of stuff over 10Khz cuzā€¦computer.
Not really though.

I am pretty excited to see your new ā€œQā€. Most of the under $20 stuff has been a bit weak on the bass side, with the ZEX and CRA being the best options. They are both a bit hot at 5k, and the gain on the ZEX was always a bit off, and you have addressed both.

The biggest knock will probably be that they graph darker than Mele, but there are already plenty of bright $20 IEMs on the market. It seems like you found a space that nobody is bothering to compete in, which seems pretty smart to me.

Iā€™m actually very confusedā€¦do i read this graph right??
It seems that there is nothing in the pinna gain region (red circle).

Please correct if Iā€™m wrong.

I have played with sound spectrum using free apps and it seems that vocals are way lower in the frequency domain than what people think it is.

The frequency is the y axis not the x axis like on FR graphs. You kinda have to zoom in to see the scale but there is very little happening over 4K

The x is the song time if I am reading it correctly

What is that software for the FR analysis in time domain?

Highlighted is the fr from 20Hz to 20kHz

Oh weird. It looks like those are two different graphs side by sideā€¦

Thatā€™s a quality answer, thanks! I thought that dip in the 5-8khz region might be responsible for the darker vocals cuz that seemed to be the main difference between sets which i thought had non-recessed vocals (oh10, chu, bl03, cra) and the mele. I never really looked at the region past 9k, but the harmonics chart does extend quite far, so maybe itā€™s time to properly play around with eq to narrow down what i should really watch out for. Totally hadnā€™t considered that the ā€˜sparkā€™ might be way further up than i thought

For what its worth I always felt the Serial and Mele were dark compared to the Olina, canon and vortex and the biggest difference/similarity I have found between those 4 IEMs is that

  • Mele and serial have a decent cut that starts at 5k and ends at 8k
  • Vortex, Canon and Olina have a smaller cut that starts closer to 5.5-6k and goes to about 8k

I know the 8k may be just resonance but I now stay away IEMs with a big cut at 5k cause Iā€™m pretty positive they will be too dark for my ear

5-9k is definitely the area that most affects ā€œairā€ in IEMs for me. If I move 15k +/-10db I donā€™t hear the difference. If I move 8k, you bet your bottom itā€™ll mess with me

it is essentially a photo of a millisecond
If you look at the main window to left you can see the ear gain zone is in constant action but i was showing a moment of extension.

Good example of the true value of graphs.
They cannot tell what is good.
They can show if youā€™ve seen that movie before and you know you wonā€™t like it.
That alone is of tremendous value as wasted money is bad bad bad.

I doubted the graph and bought the hype and it cost $4,000 and i lost
It is odd vocal replay and a lot more and tizzy and harmonics that elevate instead of fall away is weird to the brain. Total waste of cash and the graph shoulda been trusted.
i learned though

Worth notingā€¦never heard the Traillii called dark. Not scouring every review but Iā€™d never use that term

Great iniative, I dig the format. Seems both you and Crin gonna take a shot at the 20$ bracket.

EJ07 on your walking away list just attests to how musical that set is.
