Love everything about it - color scheme, different tuning? Wonder what has changed but if I had to guess - +3db bass and -2db gain or somewhere in the treble :sunglasses:

Imho it really does not need more bass, even though i love bass. Amount and quality is really nice already.

If it could need anything that would be a highshelf of 1-2db (depending on genre and mastering) at arround 8K to give it just a tad more sparkle

I ended up with 1db more at 8K and Called the EQ Profile “Zetian Wu Sparkle” and TANGZU should do the same with the IEM…Black and Sparkly Edition

Let us see what Mr. HBB has in store for us - I personally think just the new color scheme and cable are a nice little edition. If the price were to be the same, I think it gives people who haven’t purchased yet a nice option between the two.

When people describe vocals as being “forward” do people generally mean that the vocal seems to originate further FROM your face or that the singer seems to have made a step forward TOWARDS your face?

I think some people use the same words but mean the opposite.

It’s been bugging me for a long time.

When I think of or use the term ‘forward’ vocals I think of the Monarch’s signature where it sounds like the vocalist is in front of the entire band and mix. They’re closer to your face. But that’s just my interpretation

This is the only interpretation I’ve ever come across.
If they are forward they are closer to you.
If someone says vocals are forward to mean they are further from you, they are causing confusion as they should say “recessed” instead.

Exactly - anything that is perceived as deeper in the mix, I use the term recessed or relaxed in some cases.

bingo! Recessed and relaxed are interesting ones though. I use them slightly differently.

Recessed: deeper in the mix, implies a sense of depth generated
relaxed: lacking energy that usually comes from upper harmonics (I think?). Doesn’t necessarily relate to staging. If taken to the extreme the sound will come off as muted

For instance I think the moonlight vocals are both forward and relaxed.

Does the Mahina seem close to the same?

I never heard the Mahina but I have EQ’d my Moonlight to it before which I believe should be pretty dang close. The vocals are still forward however they get even more relaxed and a bit darker because of the increased bass presence. I wouldn’t say they get into veiled or muted territory but the balance does feel off for me compared to the Moonlight.

Bass is not going up. It was already a hitter. Adding more would make it a non option for many.
I think the WU already had the best bass among the planars

I was just thinking why there aren’t any calls collabs. Reviewers tend to have pretty strong opinions on cables.

It would be an invite to disaster.
If you are pro… cable does something besides pass data you are in a spot
“Cable tightens up the bass??..really?”
If you think cheap is enough…just pass the signal then the margin for company is small and the influencer
who gets a cut is not doing much besides putting their name on a lightning rod for small profit and lots of meming
IMO

I think you nailed a great example.
Acoustics /Psychoacoustics is facinating

Tucking the early fundamental of vocals pulls the gain at you, it’s like “stealing focus”
People call it a dry or thinner replay but everyone has a way of describing the phenom.

Interestingly, The Elysian DIVA pushes back on that with even more sub bass making for a low subtle hum/drone like being next to an amp that is live and patched in but not playing back anything. Adds a warmth.
I bought the DIVA full price because of that 1st experience being so unique I thought I was having a overly sweet memory of the set.
Nope.
It does counter that dry tuck.
I’m not as antiHarman as I once was but the pigeon holing of what is proper tuning is making some sets get bypassed because they don’t adhere to a variation of that target.

Do you think you would add a version of Harman to your squig target lists, so we could play around with viewing graphs against it?

Yeah, I have to add several targets including nymz and hobby talk and some others. I can add that as well :call_me_hand:
