Bad Guy Good Audio Rankings and stuff (under construction) (Part 2)

I’m the first to admit, I’m a sucker for marketing, but I appreciate Fir Audio putting this information up as well as decent warranty.

I once made my shell 100% more thicker than industry standard
Resin shells, recommended wall thickness is about 1mm,
(Was surprised to hear during raven apology that EE’s standard was 0.7mm :grimacing:)
I developed a version of my proto using 2mm thick walls, apparently that was overkill

I refused the transparent case because I read earlier your review about air bubbles in the case…
I made a black case, thickness 2mm where the drivers are located and thickness 1mm where the channels are already located where the ear pads are attached

How are the big Z1R ? Would they be a rec for a top closed headphone ?

Aurum was quite light on bass, actually. Its quality was phenomenal, all right, but quantity-wise lacking.

At times it appeared a bit shouty to my ears, but I’m very sensitive to most ESTs, so…

“Six” was all-BA set and I’m pretty sure it didn’t feature 20cm bass tube. XD
It’d travel right to the insides of your brain, if it did.

I own Argentum - it was my first CIEM and pretty much first mid-tier set. I’m still very happy with it and use it quite regularly during commuting or travels.

yep im kinda like that too (though not a rap fan) but everything from Gregorian chant to metallica, a bit of classical and choral music to all the classic 70s bands i grew up with…why limit your choices cos there are suprises all over the musical spectrum you miss out on otherwise.

OST’s are some of the finest recordign too as they are not mixed for radio or mobile listening so have full dymanic range for the cinema.
Gladiator and Interstellar are fabulous OST’s and the latter is a belter of a test for bass as the church organ peddle they recorede it on goes way down to 17hz.
Try “waiting for the crash” of the Interstellar OST.

It does have 20cm bass tube or pretty close to it,
I once designed a shell with over 100cm bass tube,

so yes, it’s possible. I couldn’t print mine cos the way its designed, it’s impossible to clean up the resin. (The tubes are super coiled, i work them into the structure of the iem)

As for aurum’s bass, iirc that dd requires a good ton of power to drive it, I’m not sure of the gear you use but it would probably work well off a totl dap ig.

Hate to agree with you once again because some people might think I’m bias…but if I were to post this vid…my conclusions would mimic yours to a T

I’ve been A/Bing the 4 and the 10 over and over with specific timestamps and do have to give a slight edge to the 10…maybe copium…maybe desire to have spent my wifes money on something else (like the Jupiter, right honey)

So…the 10 is the most musical to me but the 4 is the wiser choice as the 10 is not worth twice the price…still fuckin love it though…Thie is an exceptional company…kind of like Joe DiMaggio…no flash but always consistent

Oh…and the 2 is gone because I’m done with V’s…except for the Scarlet…if it ever f’n gets here…and any V set that has a permanent place in my stable

Edit…and I got the perfect listening environment…down in Vaca Key babysitting my aunts dogs for a few days…wife said it’s 18 degrees this morning in Jersey…ahhh…poor baby…gave her a chance to come down

That’s right Dave…I just love music…period…all these conversations about what’s superior to something else…big…bigger…best…my side your side…I’m right you’re wrong

Just give me something to listen man

I demo’d them briefly in a store a long time back. They can be wide yet have a club like thump which can veil aspects of the FR. Interesting, different - but ultimately I just found them too laid back to ever justify (for me). Since then I have realised just how important it is to match up to your library and decide what’s most important to you. I haven’t looked at headphones for a while but the TH900 is the closest to my preferences (to my memory) but even then, it can be spicy and I’d have to mod it (see lawton mods) and that is out of my means. Sivga Oriole (not heard) has a FR closer to my preferences and price bracket. Sorry I can’t be more help, perhaps others can chime in with their experiences. Here are a couple videos which may help:

Lovers of profound Bass, movie soundtracks and canpur owners…Assemble…

Classical has a lot of dynamic range across all the different instruments and space in which the instruments live. Handy for comparing how well IEMs perform.

I’ve had ‘can you hear the music?’ - oppenheimer OST on repeat recently, and the soundstage changes a lot with just a couple db difference in the upper treble region

Wow. I’d have never thought it’s possible to fit 20 cm of something inside the IEM.
Turns out it’s just like intestines.

Amazing.

It’s a trip to my mind that it sounds like recessed mids despite a graph that is nearly thesame as the other 2.
Crazy how little graphs tell beyond tonality

Absolutely! And sorry to get off-topic again - I recently got the chance to watch a 70mm screening of Interstellar/oppenheimer at BFI IMAX and truly from a sound perspective, it is something to be experienced. These Nolan OST’s were mixed for that space not headphones or home theaters. They upgraded the sound system last year. Apparently the bass drivers are arranged facing each other which helps to produce lower frequencies constructively. It is what leaving the house to see cinema is supposed to be about. And a sound experience I would humbly describe as #endgame. I will be chasing that sound for years to come. Do I sound hyperbolic?

For any speaker nerds interested in that system, this video excellently describes how they achieve that sound:

As for Hans Zimmer - incredible work on interstellar but he bakes in so much bloated bass that I find it distracting at times. I want to run into his studio and throw his keyboard to the ground “CONTROL YOURSELF HANS! Use the Bass responsibly, not for cheap thrills!” Ahh I might be too obsessed, Its ok @Ohmboy , I’ll put myself on a timeout

There is no topic in here. Just chat.

Hans Zimmer did Inception?
That was a brilliant score behind that flick :notes:

That is pretty strange huh…obviously graphs don’t tell the whole story

I look at a graph sometimes and I say no fuckin way…and initially I hear the monitors that way…and then sometimes I adjust and begin to enjoy them…but usually it’s fleeting so it could be just the mood I’m in
