Best budget headphones

Hey everyone,

I am looking for your recommendations for a new pair of headphones. Nothing fancy, just a pair of decent headphones. I am hoping to spend less than $100 on them (if that is possible) and am realistic that that will not get me anything great. I have no experience with headphones of any quality and don’t know much about the technical terms around sound quality. I will be using them to listen to music at my desk and while doing woodwork in my shop, and listening to hard rock, metal, hip-hop and rap.

Here are the features I am hoping for them to have:

Over ear

Decent sound quality

Passive noise canceling

Bluetooth and corded connectivity

Requires no extra amps or drivers or anything needed

Thank you so much for the help!

firstly, welcome to HFG, Noah!

for your inquiry, the only thing that comes to mind it the Sony WH-CH720N. they often go on sale for close to $100. I’ve seen them for as low as $130.00 CAD up here, which means if a similar promo is happening south of the 49th, they would be about $90 USD.

If 100$ is your budget i’d go for an IEM, you get a much better bang-for-the-buck, there are a ton of decently priced iems that will beat 99% of any headphone at that price bracket (Koss are the exception but they are on-ear)

this could be true. I don’t like IEM’s so don’t think of them as a possible solution when answering questions.

Thank you for the welcome!
I am trying to really keep the price down, so I don’t think the Sony WH-CH720N are the one for me.
I prefer the feel and sound of over ear headphones, so i’d rather get one of those.
Some other people have recommended the JBL Tune 710BT, are these any good?

they are over ear. do you mean on ear?

Unless you have tiny ears, they are on ear, not over - and if you are ok with on ear you are better off with Koss  the problem is that very few headphone are in the 100$ range (good ones that is), and none of them have BT (as far as i know of), so your options are either go for an on-ear headphone or go for an iem

If you can expand the budget to 150$ you can get the AKG 361 or 371, with BT - those are pretty solid sets (i personally like the 361)

Didn’t the sound core q30 have some decent reviews? But I have no personal experience with them so not to sure about them :grimacing:

I’m looking for something in a similar price range as these.

Bluetooth isn’t important to me though, are there better options sound wise that don’t have Bluetooth?

A few questions,

  1. do you have an amp?
  2. what do you listen to?
  3. do you want as an “on the go headphone” (meaning no open back)
  1. No amp, I’d like something I can just plug into my computer with no fuss. I don’t want a IEM, and would rather over ear than on ear. It bothers my ears to wear ones that are on ear for long periods of time.

  2. I listen to EDM and rock mostly, sometimes touching into the edges of pop. Avicii, Calvin Harris, Ellie Goulding, Martin Garrix, David Guetta, Arctic Monkeys, Palace, Castlecomer, Phoenix, etc. I like bass, and I like a clean sound.

  3. I will be using them mostly around the house, but I think I’d rather closed back, since I often use headphones around other people in my house (thus I want the passive noise canceling, plus I don’t want to be bothering others with my music). I’ve never owned open back before though, so I’m only basing what they’re like off of what I can learn from google.

Thanks for the help!

Then i’d go for the AKG 371 (again with the budget you kind of limited) or you could try getting a used Meze 99 (noir or neo, they are pretty much the same)

Sounds good, thanks for the help, I’ll shop around and see what I can for my price range (which yes, is limited). Hopefully I can get something on sale or used that would still be pretty good.

Used is probably the best bang for the buck you can get though i still would say look into iems, the price to performance skyrockets with IEMs at this price range

I started this with a headphones only mindset.

I hate earbuds a lot. My ears will hurt from having earbuds in for hours at a time (some days I’ll be listening for 8+ hrs) so now I just avoid them. Because of that, I don’t have experience with IEMs.

Are IEMs noticeably more comfortable than earbuds? From the internet they look mostly like they’d feel the same, not sure if that holds up irl.

try a simple experiment try out the 7Hz Salnotes Zero, its 20$ great bang for the buck IEM, its not the only one at this price range but it a great all rounder - that way you can try out iems without eating up much of your budget and they come with decent tips out of the box (good ear tips help with the sound and the comfort and you can always upgrade)

That’s a good idea. And if I buy them through amazon I could probably return them if I really don’t like them.
