I’ve been pretty casual in my experience in the audiophile world, but I have tried KOSS KSC75, Sennheisers PC37x, EPOS H6Pro, Sony XM4s, and TYGR300r.
My favorite sound signature is the Sony XM4s with the deep sub-bass even though I know it’s an earbud, and I’ve been missing that feeling with my current headphones, TYGR300r.
I am pretty competitive in the Apex scene and I still care about imaging, but I still love to enjoy music with the sub-bass emphasis that just really makes me feel the music. Are there any good headphones under 200 dollars that are pretty good in that sense?
The best at what you describe would be the Beyerdynamic DT770 250 ohm, or without an amplifier the Beyerdynamic MMX300. Used in good condition with a Soundblaster X1 will power them and give surround 7.1 options for gaming.
If you go IEMs you’ll get a lot more for the money, the Salnotes Zero:2 is one I just got in and it’s great for gaming and music for $24 and you can power them with a $9 Apple 3.5mm/USB adapter easily. Surround sound is over-rated for most games, it just splits the 2 channels and you lose resolution. The DT770 250 ohm has bass that goes all the way down to sub bass frequencies and doesn’t roll off. Other IEMs with bass you can go gaming with are the Moondrop Chu 2 and ZiiGaat NUO which are crazy good value for the money, and easily powered with the Apple adapter. All the sound isolation and privacy at the same time as closed back models.
Beyerdynamic DT150 should definitely be considered & the longer you let them run it the better they seem to get in SQ across the board. They’re also not expensive compared to their best competitors.
Since I got a pair Eris headphones, maybe a month ago, they have made me appreciate the Beyerdynamic DT150 even more. I had forgotten that I even had them when I was looking for something I could compare to the Eris. took them out to compare to the Harmonicdyne Eris I hadn’t put much time on DT150, as I had figured that the open back designs were most likely going to offer the width & depth I want to hear in the soundstage. I got the Eris because of the bass violence & they’re reported to have the ability to project a soundstage. The Eris certainly do bass violence but I was disappointed with the soundstage width. I checked my Sony CD900 first. I hadn’t put them on but for a moment since I got them. They seemed to be very bass heavy I recall in the first listen. Compared to the Eris the CD900 have no bass at all. Then I remembered the DT150. I put them on & WHAT! These do violent bass too? YES. The DT150 have similar bass capabilities as the Eris. However the DT150 to my ear beat the Eris on soundstage width & depth. The DT150 to my ear beat the Eris on voices, being a bit more forward than the Eris vocal presentation. The only drawback with the DT150 is that they’re 250ohm & need a stought amp. I’m using a Topping A70 Pro & on low gain to get them approximately volume matched with the Eris, I’ve got the volume at -15db to -12db for the DT150 & -35db to -32db for the Eris. The Eris might beat out the DT150 in outright sub bass performance but that’s it. I need more time to be certain about it, as the DT150 are no joke on bass output with the Topping A70 Pro powering them. I wish I had paid attention to the DT150 when I got them. I only listened to them for a few minutes a day for 3 or 4 days & then I put them on the shelf. Why I don’t use high gain is that a lot of the material I like to listen to was recorded on tape I guess, or the room mics are picking up some air flow in the live room. The hiss gets to be too much on high gain. It’s not the headphones or the amp that are hissing. It’s in the recording itself. Even in movies, like Blade Runner 2049, the hiss is ridiculous on high gain. I forgot one thing. The Eris are about like an open back. They don’t block much sound from other sources of noise outside the cups. The DT150 do lower the level of other noise sources outside of the cups quite a bit.
