Before Nirvana… before Butthole Surfers even, there was Flipper:
This is an amaaaaaaaazzzzzzzing lineup!
I was on The Butthole Surfers guest list for the Nirvana In Utero show at the LA Forum…also saw Flipper a few times in the early 80’s.
A few very different experiences:
- Saw Hüsker Du and an opening act, Electric Love Muffin, in a crowded club in Philly back in the day. Slam danced. It was amazing.
- Wandered into a campus coffee shop in, I think, 1989, and saw there was going to be a performance. I took a seat. 5 feet in front of me stood two women with acoustic guitars. There were no other musicians. Indigo Girls. They opened with “Strange Fire,” and I was blown away.
- I saw The Who in the 80s. During Baba O’Reilly I recall thinking, if Roger Daltry is the last thing I ever hear because I’m about to lose my hearing, so be it. Fantastic show.
- I saw the Allman Brothers. Whiping Post live is an amazing thing. And I recall realizing why I found Dead shows boring and thinking, re: the Allman Brothers, now THAT is a great blues band.
Funny. I was just thinking about how after that Indigo Girls concert I drove with a friend to Tower Records to buy a tape cassette.
Bob Mould is still around and doing stuff, I think. You might want to check out The Steel Woods’ version of ‘Whipping Post’ sometime, though it would be impossible to beat the Allman Bros. The song is truly a wonder… numerous time and key changes. The Steel Woods work in a little Allman Bros. joke that hard core fans might recognize and enjoy!
2010, Bucharest, Jean Michel Jarre.
I have seen Rammstein, Metallica, Iron Maiden and a loooot of other live shows, I have been to giant festivals like Waken, Electric Castle, Untold, but nothing got close to the spectacle and the goosebumps I felt during this Jean Michel Jarre concert.
I stood next to the guy filming this:
Pearl Jam is my favorite live act I’ve seen them 25 times, MSG night 2 2010 is my favorite one
