Best headphones for competitive gaming

Hi everyone,

I’m currently looking for the best headphones for competitive gaming, specifically for Rainbow Six Siege on Xbox.

My main priorities are:

  • Accurate spatial imaging (to pinpoint enemies at distance)
  • Strong vertical audio (hearing footsteps above/below clearly)
  • Clear midrange (since that’s where footsteps usually sit)

I’ve read a lot of conflicting opinions both here and on Reddit, so I’m a bit stuck on what to choose.

So far, I’ve been looking into:

  • Sennheiser HD 599
  • Sennheiser HD 560S
  • HiFiMan HE400se
  • FiiO FT3 / FiiO FT1 / FiiO JT7/JT3
  • Audio-Technica ATH-R30x
  • Simgot EP5

I had pretty much settled on the HD 599 since I can get them for just over €80, which seemed like great price-to-performance—but now I’m second-guessing after reading more comparisons.

A few things about my situation:

  • Budget: under €150 (preferably lower)
  • Platform: Xbox (so I’m unsure how practical DAC/amp setups are)
  • Use case: purely competitive advantage in Siege (music performance isn’t a priority)

If anyone has experience with these—or other recommendations in this price range—I’d really appreciate your input, especially regarding imaging and positional accuracy.

Thanks in advance!

The Sennheiser 560S is a good choice, have played Destiny 2 and Warframe on them and was fun. If you can find the Audio Technica ADH1000X those are kingpin for gaming, and very easy to power from a console. Even on an Apple USB adapter I keep them at 20 percent volume, they’re that easy to drive. Even a wireless gaming controller can get them loud enough. Amazing vocals, and footsteps are consistent and accurate.

Thanks for the input, the adh100x are out of my budget though. Have you tried the Philips shp5900?

I assume you meant the SHP9500, but yes, I have and they are a solid pick for gaming.

I have a pair with the V-MODA BoomPro Microphone ( $20 ), and it makes for a solid headset and gives you a cable upgrade in the deal too.

Thanks for the insight, for me to buy them on Amazon it costs just over €80 (92usd) are they still worth it at this price or do you recommend anything else?
