Best headphones for directional audio on PS5?

Price isn’t so much of an issue, although I want to pay for just whatt I need, would like good bass and good sound quality for music as well, although the best directional audio is the priority.

I don’t have an answer for you but am interested as well. I have done some searching through threads here but many are older. I am also interested in the idea of a high quality headphone for gaming (don’t need a mic) but that would also be pleasing for movies and music. I have a set of moderately decent Sony’s (MDR MV1) that I will use when not wanting to use speakers but would like a higher quality solution for the long term. Hoping this will bump the topic up and we get some engagement.

Well.. for starters you’d have to set a budget, wired vs wireless( its worth noting that if wireless is the goal the latency and overall costs alongside the headache usually isn’t worth it outside of actual wireless headsets), decide what sound signature your looking for because “good bass and good sound quality” doesn’t really say a lot something with just those guiding points will make it borderline impossible to recommend anything, good imaging aka “directional audio” has plenty in that space potentially hundreds of cans really.

Provided your choosing wired and you know more on what your looking for then the next step would be highly likely obtaining an amp/dac that supports the ps5. As we know currently the ps5 only supports UAC1 while amps and dacs are typically UAC2 with special exceptions. Some devices have a special firmware or fallback cable to use UAC1 meanwhile others use a converter via the optical port.

If you cannot afford an amp setup, or would rather go an ampless setup this is still possible but you would be extremely limited to only very low powered headphones of around 32-40 or lower ohm impedance ideally(based on ps5 controller wattage).. with anything higher pushing into the territory where the headphone may be too quiet. It’s worth noting that even if the ohms are low, some headphones, like a planar magnetic, state they require low ohms of impedance but will still be hard to drive and won’t sound right at all off a controller due to things like sensitivity and other factors

Most I know when it comes to the ps5 tend to opt towards IEMS for not only cheaper cost, but IEMS are far easier to fully drive off the controller comfortably. Cheaper units like 7hz Sonus come to mind as its one of those I have seen people speak on several times, there are alternatives and this is just an example.

Budget of $1000 for headphones, $400 for dac/amp

Wired works

For the sound signature I want immersive, crystal clear audio that reveals all details while having elite directional audio, the best of the best. With bass with impact and depth.
