Bottlehead Crack + Speedball: HD600 vs HD650

So from a technicality perspective it is pretty high above an hd600, but I would say the 600 is still for me at least the more pleasing sound for what I want out of the bhc+sb, I guess it would come down to what type of sound are you after? I would also look into a beyer 880 600 ohm as well along with the 600

My Beyer 177X experience left me so numb! LOL I guess I am just too sensitive on the high end. But I’d love to explore on the cheap if I can.

An HD600 can be had for $200 bucks, so I’m not opposed to the thousand dollar savings. I guess what I’d really like it to just “try” a HD800s to see what it’s all about and if the added stage and accuracy are worth it.

Honestly shocked by how good the HD58X sounded so I am genuinely curious for more.

Fair enough lol, but I would seriously still suggest the 880 600 to at least try as it’s pretty different from the 177x and also it sounds very different on the bhc, really different

I mean you could try the 600s first and the 800s later? The 800s are def worth trying for sure, but I know personally for me they ended up being something I didn’t want to keep overtime

You and @DagoRed could start a support group.

I would also highly suggest at least trying an hd600/650. Any bhc owner owes it to themselves lol

I think when I get home again I’ll reread my initial post and provide an update if needed.

I’m also hoping the bhc works well with zmf. Aeolus should be here next week :ok_hand:

It only took me 117 days for mine. You’re getting there @db_Cooper.

Wow, this thread has been quiet for a long time.
Anybody want to mention any great combo’s they have discovered?

We all know about the HD650/HD6XX and HD600 magic, but how many folks have been surprised with a certain pairing?

I think ZMF cans do well on Crack but I haven’t tried so can’t comment.

My trio on the Crack. Verite Closed, HD600, and DT880-600

Basically just look for high impedance dynamic driver headphones.

Love the color scheme on that Crack :+1:

Yeah, I get that. 600, 650, DT880, T1.2 and ATH R70X are givens. I was just wondering if anybody had come across a great pairing that they didn’t expect.
I don’t expect a good Grado match, but maybe a Focal or Audeze match that surprised someone?

Focal and Audeze won’t be properly driven by an OTL amp. There’s zero reason to even try. It’s not a matter of synergy - it’s a matter of the capabilities of an OTL design.

The HD58X Jubilee also works well.

I personally chose the HD650 over the HD600 because I prefer more of a smooth treble and the HD600 is just a bit much for me, also I enjoy the bass more over the HD600. One thing I haven’t had a chance to do is, listen on a tube amp. Is the Bottlehead Crack a solid choice or should I try a Darkvoice? I’m just not willing to spend a ton on a tube amp, but I do want one.

Crack is one of two tube amps worth buying under a grand. The other one is not the Dark Voice :grinning:

I’ve never owned a tube amp, but was thinking of dipping my toe in the water so to speak. I think I would enjoy the Bottlehead Crack kit. It would be a fun project to get in to.

Outstanding! Do it now.

No, I have more learnin’ to do. I will buy a soldering kit next month. Then some simple, cheap projects off Amazon (build a clock, build a radio, etc.). Then order an amp kit.

Nah nah… this was about Jazz at the Pawnshop. Though, I’m seeing this was mentioned back in July and you subsequently have listed to it. So… disregard! LOL
