I loved my HD58X’s better than the HD600’s on everything except the tube amp. Then the 600’s excelled and the HD58X’s faltered.
Time will tell.
I did hunt that album down (Jazz at the Pawnshop). Great sound but the music wasn’t for me. It did remind me of a hole in my collection that needed filling though.
Revisiting this thread since I’ve now been able to put my Crack/Speedball through some use, both on critical and enjoyment use. I don’t have a proper headphone to connect to it yet. 107 days and counting on my Eikon order… sigh.
What I have listened on though has been by HD58X. Yes not the “right” set for the Crack SB but despite it not being a good match, it is still the best I’ve ever heard my HD58X. They sound wonderful. More slam, if actually a little too much bass, on the edge of boom if it wasn’t as controlled as it it. Granted this is on some disco, Dimitri From Paris CHIC remix of Greatest Dancer. But the voice detail, the broad range of anything instrumental, horns, voice, the clarity of the mid range is phenomenal. There’s even a little more light on the high end, I wouldn’t go as far as to call it sparkle, but certainly more up there than on SS amps.
Which brings me to this thread. Do I just go for the classic pairing which is the HD600? The more I read about the 800s the more I believe that what I want it to complete my headphone collection.
Other than the Eikon, my other headphone will be a newer fazored LCD-3 because I just want to take the next step from my LCD-2. Figuring the HD800s will be a good fit for the Crack but will also give me that stellar staging and accuracy that would compliment what I would call my “Holy Trinity”.
So the question is, have you guys listened to an 800s on a SB Crack, and if so is it shoulders above than the HD600 pairing?
This isn’t anything that’s going to happen short term, but 2021 will be here eventually.
One last note, the Crack listening would be just for the pure enjoyment of music, hence why I’d be willing to skip the HD600 and wait for an HD800s while I make do with the HD58X.
So from a technicality perspective it is pretty high above an hd600, but I would say the 600 is still for me at least the more pleasing sound for what I want out of the bhc+sb, I guess it would come down to what type of sound are you after? I would also look into a beyer 880 600 ohm as well along with the 600
My Beyer 177X experience left me so numb! LOL I guess I am just too sensitive on the high end. But I’d love to explore on the cheap if I can.
An HD600 can be had for $200 bucks, so I’m not opposed to the thousand dollar savings. I guess what I’d really like it to just “try” a HD800s to see what it’s all about and if the added stage and accuracy are worth it.
Honestly shocked by how good the HD58X sounded so I am genuinely curious for more.
Fair enough lol, but I would seriously still suggest the 880 600 to at least try as it’s pretty different from the 177x and also it sounds very different on the bhc, really different
I mean you could try the 600s first and the 800s later? The 800s are def worth trying for sure, but I know personally for me they ended up being something I didn’t want to keep overtime
Yeah, I get that. 600, 650, DT880, T1.2 and ATH R70X are givens. I was just wondering if anybody had come across a great pairing that they didn’t expect.
I don’t expect a good Grado match, but maybe a Focal or Audeze match that surprised someone?
Focal and Audeze won’t be properly driven by an OTL amp. There’s zero reason to even try. It’s not a matter of synergy - it’s a matter of the capabilities of an OTL design.
