Sorry to clarify: are you saying there is a quality decrease switching from RCA to balanced from the bifrost 2 to soloist?
I am currently running RCA from a bifrost 2 to soloist, sounds good to my ears, I do hear a bit of noise floor sometimes on some headphones but not too muchā¦ Would you recommend switching to balanced outputs?
Yes, when using headphones like the HE-6v2, I found there to be a noticeable increase in audio quality switching from RCA and Balanced. I found on another thread where someone contacted Schiit and they said to only use Balanced outputs for the best sound quality, as in donāt use the RCA at all. Further they said using the Balanced and RCA together will make the balanced out worse. I canāt remember which thread though. Maybe it was the He-6v2 thread?
Sounds to me the seller thought youāll wanted to use the HP output from the zen DAC and in that regard he could be right because the voltage would be to high but from the XLR in the back in fixed the Zen DAC only outputs the normal 4V, youāll have to be cautious on variable output because than the DAC can go to 5.6V if i remember correctly but that should not damage the soloist, it would only sound bad cause of clipping
Too for warranty type stuff, middle for order /shipping related issues, bottom for sales related questions. At least these are what I have used and always received responses.
you hold down the menu button for like 12 seconds and it puts it to what seems like around 105-110 volume but bypasses the volume chip and a pair of opamps in the volume stage and you gain quite a bit of clarity. i use a passive preamp/switch that has a volume knob. that volume knob and the gain stages are the only way i control volume on the soloist these days.
I guess it would come down to what sound you were after and what headphones you were running. All three are good pairings imo. The soekris is a good choice if you want something cleaner and more neutral leaning, with a focus on accuracy rather than fun (although Iāve only tried the 2541 with the burson, great microdynamics, resolution, speed and separation, and stage depth and placement accuracy. Timbre and tonality are good but not great, and itās impact and slam arenāt as good as the other mentioned, and stage could be wider). The bf2 is good at relaxing the amp a bit and adding more body and a bit more warmth without sacrificing technical ability that much (great tonal density, impact and slam, timbre, stage width. Resolution wise itās really solid but not stand out, stage depth is not as strong as width, separation could be a bit better). The ares ii adds the most coloration out of the three pushing it more warm and fun overall
Iād say you already have a pretty good dac for it already, unless you want to either take a different direction or want to upgrade. If you wanted to directly upgrade, finding an og yggy a2 is the play, but thereās a lot of appealing dacs in that range as well
How about DACs with absolute placement accuracy? I saw Falenkor was streering towards the wavedream but Iām not sure Iām looking for a warmer DAC, anything in that performance range that might be able to pull off the same kind of accuracy that would pair with as soloist? Or am I overthinking the pairing and wavedream is about as good as it gets in the range? Also a sucker for serious amounts of slam.
Well, a wavedream is going above what Iād suggest spending on the dac for a soloist, Iād want to have taken the next step forward amp wise first lol, even the wavelight would be somewhat overkill and potentially not worthwhile for the soloist. PM me so we donāt clog up this thread (or we can discuss on Sonus). And regarding placement accuracy, it depends on what type of accuracy you are after, something focused more on accuracy to real life, or accuracy to the recording, or just generally overall combined accuracy
In the same price range as a wavedream you can start looking into things like a totaldac d1-single-mk2 or d1-core, or a mojo mystique evo which I think offer even better impact/slam + grip and control than the wavedream does (they trade blows in other areas) in a similar price range (among others)
Thanks for comparing these. I have the Burson Soloist 3X paired with BF2.
What I was wondering if thereās a headphone youād suggest for that combo? Currently running HE6SE, but my gut tells me youāre right and itās wasted on my setup. I like the sound Iām getting in general. I guess if I had a cross between the Argon, Arya and HE6SE Iād be happy.
Not likely Iāll be able to upgrade that chain for a while, so is there a headphone ($1,000, 2k max) or two youād recommend to get the most out of that pairing?
Music I listen to is basic. Fleetwood Mac, Van Halen, Michael Jackson, Soundtracks.
Characteristics I care most about is the subbass rumble I get from Argons and Arya along with the punch (even with lower level speaker amp) I get from the HE6SE.
Thanks for any input and I know those are lousy sound descriptions.
