Buying my second real headphones after being and idiot

Hey, I’m thinking about buying new pair of headphones. I owned the HD407 when I was younger and looking back it sounded so good. Then I fell into the trap of gaming headphones and now I’m trying to climb back. I would like to buy some closed back headphones (I would love to try open backs, but I feel like that in my environment, i would be too noisy for others behinnd my walls, correct me if im wrong), detachable cable would be nice and for now a pair which doesn’t need to be amped. The budget is around 150 euros. I looked at some and here are my top choices: CB1, M40x, WS1100is (but they’re too expensive now), K361. I’d like to know your opinions and if you could list some other not so mainstream headphones, cause I feel like all the reviews are about the same headphones and I might be missing some. Thanks

What music do you listen to?

All kinds of it, usually alternative rock, house, indie pop.

Gotcha. Well you do have a decent amount of options, any specific type of signature you are looking for?

Honestly, I’m just really open to everything, I would like to explore things in the audio world, but now I have to keep it on budget

Gotcha, well something that I think would be pretty solid would be the k371, overall great for an all rounder with good detail, a refined signature, pretty nice comfort and build, and isn’t amp picky. I like the m40x but imo comfort is questionable and I think the 371 is my preference sound wise for an all rounder. The ws1100is is going to be solid in comfort and sound imo, but I think the 371 is more impressive in terms of technicalities. The cb1 is nice for comfort but the build isn’t the best, and the sound is overall average imo

What kind of walls? Cubicle walls and tent walls, sure. Regular drywall or plaster walls in a room with a door? Probably not. Open backs certainly leak, but usually not enough to be heard through the solid walls and closed door of most real rooms.

Edit: welcome to HFGF :beers:

I would say it depends on the type of open back, like a 58x or something might be able to get by with, but a hifiman might leak too much

What about the Sennheiser HD 280? there on sale right now for 80$

How do they stack up to the k371? And what about the Sivga 002, 006 and the Yamaha MT5?

They are a lot less comfortable.
The HD 280 Pro’s are not all-day-long headphones.

Ehhh they can be, just gotta stretch out the clamp a bit.

Totally forgot about the Yamahas, how do they compare with the akgs?

Really, I might consider buying a pair of open back. I liked the shp9500 or x2hr

The “new version” might be worth it.

what new version?

Dude, open backs usually sound better than closed. If you can get a open back you should. But the Phillips headphones are not that great. If you can you should seriously consider the 58x from Massdrop. Or a used one if your from a country that cant buy drop.

really?, i always saw good reviews on the shps

Theres been a lot of people here who have not liked them. Their ok

Whether the SHPs are good or not depends completely on perspective and preference. If you’re coming from whatever cheap earbuds came with your phone years ago, they probably sound pretty great. If you’re coming from Beats, it may take some adjustment to get used to the change in sound signature. Either way, they’re generally considered to be a great sound quality to price value, but if you have experience with higher end gear, it’s likely that the value is less appreciable.

I personally had SHPs until recently and still have the X2HR. I thoroughly enjoy/ed both as I’ve found myself being pulled into the audio riptide, and in many ways it was the SHPs that got me started.

That said, the 58x is also a pretty great value even at the now full price.

At the end of the day, take the advice you get here with a grain of salt and a heavy dose of what you know about your own music/sound preferences and use case, and make decisions that are right for where you are in your audio journey (and for your wallet).
