Dac under 500$ for Asgard 3

Hi! I’m newbie to this forum, im just looking for advice, currently im using e30 + asgard 3 with different beyerdynamic cans. I hear that e30 have tons of details, but sound too simple(i can describe it that way), im looking for more natural sound from dac part, my budget is currently 500$. Bifrost 2 with shipping and taxes will be 1000$:( Initially im used e30+l30 stack, but l30 can’t handle properly dt 1990, asgard 3 do it much better, 770 sound better from asgard too: soundstage is bigger, sound is more massive.

Some more info: i tried modi multibit, and didn’t like it, i think part of details was stolen and it sounds like equaliser is turned on.

Waiting for your advices, thank you

I would honestly tell you to save for the bf2 or look some used to show up, but I would assume you aren’t in a place where they would show up often used based on how expensive it would be to get one new. I might suggest checking out a denafrips ares ii dac, it’s a solid alternative to the bifrost but would still be up there in price (but most likely less than the bf2 potentially). The bf2 is a more neutral slightly warmer slightly smoother dac, pretty wide and technically capable yet forgiving, fairly organic. The ares ii is a bit more fun and forward in detail, still smoother, more noticeably warmer tuned, a bit less spaciousness but better depth and more accurate placement, very nice.

If you still wouldn’t be able spend that much, the allo revolution dac with the shanti lps is a really nice option that can also be tuned for what type of sound you are after, should be under 500 iirc, very capable for the price

Thoughts on the new smsl su 9? Was wondering how this stacked up against dacs like the ares, bifrost while being in the $400 range.

Haven’t heard it yet so can’t say. I do know a friend who has one who finds it pretty meh, but nothing I can’t really say on it

Thank you for advice. 1000$ for bifrost is really too much. Glad to hear, that not only me thinks that e30 is absolutely not endgame. But i hoped to hear, that something from chifi i can take in this range, because chifi is easy to ship to my country

Currently i have on option, to get used in good condition d50s only for 130$, is it worth trying after e30?

Honestly I would just stick with the e30 rather than getting the d50s imo, the d50s would give you a bit more detail but it is going to be a brighter a bit sharper dac, it would be a somewhat marginal upgrade

If the allo revolution would be too expensive as well, and you have to get chifi, the aune x8 is a decent option and it should give you a more detailed and a bit more organic sound than the e30

Thank you, Mon! Very strange but different chargers for e30 make it sound so different! I dont like it actually, because i don’t know whic sound is right:( IMG_20201027_183541|281x500

Yes the different power supplies tend to change the sound, that’s why I’m higher end audio equipment the manufacturers tend to focus a lot on the power supplies. That allo I mentioned sells a few high quality power supplies like the nirvana smps and shanti lps, and I like those as they boost the sound quality of that specific dac

The one that is right is the one that sounds best to you lol

Yes you are so right. It is much cleaner)
