Yeah I have the balanced cable with the Aeon 2s so I wanted to take advantage of it. I was mostly looking for a dac/amp for phone and laptop use.

Do you want it to be able to serve dual purpose as your desktop amp, or do you have a desktop setup? Something to consider with the Nano is that it could serve later as a DAC for a desktop amp since it has a line out function (as does the XD05), whereas the Hip does not. Is your balanced cable terminating in a 3.5mm balanced, or have an adapter? That’s what you get for balanced on the Nano vs. the 4.4mm on the Hip. The XD05 also has the option for a bluetooth adapter, where the Nano and Hip do not, but the XDSD does. Lots of options for portable depending on your use case.

I don’t have a desktop setup at the moment. I’ll just be using it connected to my laptop or my phone.

I was going to get this 4.4 or this 3.5 adapter depending on which I choose. I’m not really sure if I need bluetooth.

Then I think the Nano could make a lot of sense, IMO, and could serve as a DAC for a desktop amp later on if you decide to get one or need more power for later headphone purchases. You can sometimes find an open box for around $150-$160.

Can anyone who has spent a lot of time with this and more dynamic headphones like the Elegia share in depth feedback on the dynamics?

Some say they’re decent now. I’m considering buying these but saw a Max Settings review which said dynamics are positively limp, so now I’m wary of purchase. Not sure whether that’s a fair evaluation or how much amp can impact dynamics for these.

Was his review on the Aeon 2, or the original? I believe Resolve Reviews actually really liked the original Aeon Open, and the 2s are supposed to be an all around improvement, but especially in dynamics. I only have the Aeon Open X, so I can’t speak to the 2s.

Yeah he reviewed Aeon 2 closed. He said everything is on point except dynamics, which basically have no real improvement

Ok, yeah, haven’t seen that one yet. Honestly, I don’t find the dynamics to be an issue. I’ve seen some who think the OG Aeons are boring, but improved by the pads (same as Aeon 2) on the Aeon Open X, and a complete redesign on the Aeon 2 with all around improvement. I personally find them to be mildly V shaped with nice slam, and pretty fun, though not as lively as the Elex. Depending on preference, I think some can find the Elex almost too lively, and somewhat fatiguing as a result.

I can compare to the aeon x open and I could hear the dynamics as compressed on those. While on the aeon2 closed this isn’t really an audible issue for me.

I have both the Elegia and Aeon 2 Closed. I find the Aeon 2 Closed dynamics to be mostly compressed in the bass region. Rest of frequency range is adequate. The lack of dynamics in the bass region is noticeable on rock/metal songs with alot of double bass drumming going on. Old Nothing by Rivers of Nihil is a great example.

Does the Elegia perform better in terms of bass dynamics?

This confirms what I was thinking, I listen to mostly instrumental rock. I really wanted to like Aeon 2 for that but I was too worried I wouldn’t enjoy them as much. I wound up choosing Elegia instead

Yes it is better then the Aeon 2 Closed across the frequency range.

Just got an email from Apos Audio they have officially started carrying aeon 2’s with free returns for those wanting to audition. That’s awesome! Going to save some money to the side I have been meaning to audition these since aeon open x was added to my permanent collection.

Hmm, is this an issue for the Aeon 2 opens as well?

I’m not sure what bass compression would actually sound like, but I think you’ll like these quite a bit

Aeon 2 Opens here after 50+ hours have bass that is reallt pretty good, no compression here…they need a really good amp to make the pairing stellar…

I noticed really quickly that the aeon are amp particular on their sound. Once I balanced them to my liquid platinum they really woke up. Good to hear theres no compression. I would assume they will perform well on the platinum as well

I mentioned this before, but most good SS amps will make these cans come alive.

WIth 20 + amps around, the lowly Schiit Magni 3 (not the Heresy or Magni 3+) pairs with the Aeon 2 Opens very. very well. Surprisingly well. Even better to me that the Jot, Lyr3, and other amps…there is magic here with this amp and these cans…

Which tuning pads does everyone use? I got these used and mine didn’t come with them, so I was wondering if i should spend the $25 on them. Also, has anyone tried the perforated ear pads?

You bought them and they didn’t have them? If you bought them from a provider i would definitely contact them over that cause it’s supposed to come with them. I just use what 1 notch white felt normally though zeos’s review of the open x may help ya out on how some of the tuning pads act. they are worth buying though they improve the sound

Changing the ear pads is a bit of a pain in the ass as you need the adhesive. It doesn’t clip on or anything it’s glued on. The perfs should come already on the open while the non perforated are on the closed
