Darkvoice 336SE tube rolling

Just out of curiosity, why do you run a DarkVoice AND a Tuba? Are they that different?

Thanks.

I don’t have the Darkvoice any longer, but I owned it for 2 years and rolled countless numbers of tubes on it.

That being said, I do have a Bottlehead Crack Speedball and Tuba. The tuba is more versatile and has a low and high impedance output. The Bottlehead is an OTL, so only my ZMFs and HD650 are used on that.

Have you used the expensive Tung Sol 5998? Is it really worth the money?
I will try the RCA first since I can’t find a 7236 here.

Maybe not worth on the darkvoice, but if you step up to a higher tier amp I think it is. For the darkvoice, an RCA 6AS7G is a good choice IMO.

Ok that’s what I thought about the expensive tubes. Maybe I will find out sometime in the future :S
:+1: I will leave my thoughts when I have the tube!

If your set on the RCA grab the lower double D getter version.

And yes the RCA output mod works and super easy.

The 5998 are nice too have, they can bring life to some tubes that otherwise would just be sold or unused in your drawer. If you ever get the upgrade bug you’ll still have them for that new amp. For the monies a lower getter RCA is hard to beat though. You can find 5998 for the same price as the RCA…if your diligent in your search. I grabbed mine (5998) even cheaper than the RCA from a seller who didn’t know what it was. Tung Sol 6520 can be grabbed at steals too.

Did you mean to respond to me? I know, I have a 5998 for my bottlehead crack, lol.

All good, just adding to the conversation. The guy asking about the upgrades probably doesn’t have a 5998. And the 5998 isn’t too much of a tube for the Darkvoice. None if them are. Sky’s the limit, or your wallet. :joy:

Here’s a cool set-up, dual JAN-CHS 6J5GT and Tung Sol 5998…
Might roll that for a week

Now if you can find these Bendix 6080WB steel plates (rare, they’re usually graphite plated) you’ll get 80-90% of the sound at a much lower price than the graphite plated ones. Superb soundstage.

Thank you for the recommendations! I’ve grabbed the one I’ve linked above for now.
Not so easy finding those special tubes in germany. Probably I have to search whole europe next time.

So I got my RCA Black Plates tube. Just put it in, so I can’t really say anything besides the fact that Heilungs “Traust” starts to produce clipping on my DT880 600Ohm at about 3 o’clock. The brutal bassdrum in it. So it’s way more powerful than my Telefunken 6080 I guess.

Edit: I have switched on my Loki to test the clipping / distortion thing. If i turn up the bass on the Loki it starts quickly to clip ( is it even clipping? sounds like the driver is clashing with something). If i switch to the Lake People g109S with same settings it the 880s don´t do that. Whats that about? Not that i use such an EQ setting, normally i dont use it with the 880s but im just curious about it.

3 o’clock in the Darkvoice is very loud …this coming off the PC?

Yep, PC-> Modi 2 -> Darkvoice. With my telefunken 6080 i could turn the volume up all the way and could still listen to it. My listening Volume is 12 o´clock. Have simply tested how loud it can go. My darkvoice is silent till 9-9.30 ( pretty much silent)

I suspect the volume output on the PC is at half …it’s happened to me, right click on the volume icon bottom right …should reveal where your at

Volume output on my PC is mostly at 100% and i change it through my amp. Should i have it on half? Obviously it cuts the Volume in half, and i can turn it up more, but has it any other positive effect to keep in mind?

Whoah …that’s interesting … your headphone is 600ohm? Do you have another headphone a little under 600? Curious if they volume match? I’d keep the PC at 100%

Yeah ok, i keep it always at 100%. the DT880 is 600 Ohm and the only other headphone for a tube is the 6XX with 300 Ohm. This is way louder at the same volume setting.
In the end, there is no problem, it works fine! Was just confused that i can clip the 600 Ohm Headphone easily now.
