Darkvoice 336SE tube rolling

That’s the cool thing about tube rolling, and the Darkvoice does a good job, for it’s build, of delivering the true nature and character of the different tubes available. I believe the general census is warm power tube, match it with a fast preamp, and vise a versa. Warm preamp tube (front) match it with a fast power tube. Yin and Yang.

So if you were following, the left channel not working was probably/most likely caused by a suspect tube I was trying to keep alive. The base was super loose and would short out on occasion. Should’ve just toased it at first blip, anyways, it sounded really good so I tried to save it with the ole fingernail polish hack. Worked only it glued slightly off. And/or (combination maybe) of me pulling the tube out to fast. The power slowly discharges after you flip the switch off. So if you pull that tube out to quick some of that energy could stay loaded in them resistors. To my understanding, any “experts” out there educate us please if this sounds off, and people in the know shared this info with me, so my “fix” if we want to call it that, was to unplug her and pull all tubes and connections off, let her sit for 48 hours. Done.

Ahhhh I’ve been waiting for my Little Dot MK3 to ship from Drop since May 20th and it still has a hold up… 2 months later :frowning:

I saw a good deal for a DarkVoice and I might cancel my order and get this because I’ve been lurking in this thread for a while and I want to see how a tube AMP sounds.

On my profile, but here is a copy/paste.

Current Cans: Sennheiser HD600, HD58x, HD280 Pro / AudioQuest Nighthawk Carbon / Focal Elegia / Dekoni Blue T50RP Mod / Audio-Technica ATH-M50x / Koss KPH30i & KSC75

Nice collection there… Darkvoice would make a nice pairing with the Sennheiser HD600.

Better than I thought it was gonna be, excellent width. First thing I noticed. It’s not a DX7 but it’s not $400 either! :joy: Enjoying it right now, matches with the Darkvoice well. Plan on hooking it up to the iGalvanic output via a dual adapter later on. The Darkvoice loves the low end, miss the darker sound signature. I got a custom built (silver wired) OTL amp a few weeks back. Clear as f#ck but not that much low end. Have the best of both worlds I guess.

Had it tucked away for awhile, accidentally snapped the top cap off and was ready to toss the thing, then realized a little soldering could probably fix her.

For the tube gurus here:
I have my Sylvania 6SN7GTA in for a month now and i really love it. It has a sweet sound to it, much better than the new stock Tung Sol 6sn7gtb. And its dead silent. Really dead silent. That is really cool.
Hard to talk about specific differences now, coz i have no need to plug the other tube in again, but for the 25€ i´ve payed its a really good upgrade. Has pulled me back to the darkvoice again and i love that.
Now im wondering what would be a another good combo for the power tube. I currently have a Telefunken 6080 in there. Its for sure better than the stock tube, but since i have no other powertubes to compare, i dont know how much better it can be. Just interest in different things, you guys know how it is with this hobby
So my question: What do you guys think would be a good power tube to complement my 6SN7GTA?
I use my 6XX and 880 600Ohm with the darkvoice.
Is it even worth trying other power tubes or should i just settle with what i have since it makes me very happy :D?

@BoomShroom Have done the output cut mod to your darkvoice? You mentioned it earlier in this thread, curious about it.

An RCA 6AS7G black plates are nice with a fairly wide soundstage. Mellow, unobtrusive to your Sylvania. Keeps that lush thing with the Sylvania going. I read the Telefunken 6080 is a little bit on the thin sounding side of the things, but I never listened to one so I cannot give you a straight answer.

A Tung-Sol 7236 has a higher gain than the RCA (louder volume) and it seems to be more aggressive and more in your face than the RCA when volume matched (as close as possible). As to how it compares to your Telefunken 6080, I don’t know.

Both are fairly budget friendly and much better than the stock tube. Of course, for significantly higher prices, there’s the Tung-Sol 5998 and the Western Electric 421A.

I want to keep the lushness for sure! From what i´ve read, the RCA one should be very nice!
I have done a little search and found a RCA on ebay.
I think it is a black plate
Maybe you can tell me:

I haven´t found a Tung-Sol 7226 here after a quick search.
The 5998 and Western electric are nearly as much as my amp, so i dont consider these. But i will save the names for later

Yup, that’s the one. Like I said, they won’t break the bank . As to the 5998 and the 421A, that’s exactly how I feel about them.

Cool, than I will try this one. Thank you!

I think any 6AS7G tube (coke bottle shaped) will sound better than most 6080 tubes. If you have the money though, the NOS Tung Sol 5998 domino plate tubes are amazing. The previously mentioned Tung Sol 7236 is a good one too.
