Darkvoice 336SE tube rolling

Just got another Bad Boy (rebranded) and am anxious to compare it to the real deal. The getter flash on the Motorola is sick.

Can’t go wrong with Tung Sol pulling double duties… 7236 & 6SN7GT Mouse Ears

Curious on which Mundorf caps you used on your amp, there’s some out there at $500 a piece!

Not sure if this goes here but is there an official Darkvoice Amp thread?

I’m thinking this is it. Welcome

Yeah, closest thing there is to an official thread. It’s too big to turn it into the official too.

Well, seems like there’s a lot of mods and tube rolling talk here, so yeah …go for it…

Just got a new tube to replace the new stock Tung Sol
Sylvania 6SN7GTA
Not sure, probably it is from 1950s…at least this is what ive read about them.
From first impressions I like them more than the new tung sol, but can’t really tell what has changed now :joy:

It’ll take a few weeks until they settle in to your amp, then you’ll notice the differences better.

To the modders here…

One of my LED doesn’t light up sometimes, it’s the left channel one. I opened her up to look inside and it was out. Flipped the power switch on and off a few times and it’d come on! Put her back together and then nothing off. … lol. Any ideas, or should I just swap her out with a replacement.

Ok… So I’m gonna try and discharge the resistors and see if that helps, never done that before but was told it was so easy, a caveman could do it. You tap the resistors in question with another one and done … Right. So we’ll see how that goes.

Question for Darkvoice owners. What’s the difference in the little tube and the big tube? Pre amp and power tube? When rolling do you change both? Or one or the other? Does it matter?

Pre-tube (small one) makes biggest difference in sound. Power tube’s effect is much smaller, but still noticeable. Brand new Pre-tubes often come with a buzz and need more burn-in time.

@WaveTheory Does burn in vary? How long should one burn in a tube? Im assuming just leave the amp on as long you’re beside it for like a few days?

Yes. I bought a brand new Tung-Sol that needed about 72 hours before the buzz subsided enough to disappear for most music. A tried a Shuguang and its buzz disappeared in about 2 or 3 hours.

48-72 hours before real listening can begin, on average, I would say. Most tubes will also sweeten as they age through normal use.

Most of the heat comes from the power tube, and fortunately that’s not where the buzz/hum tends to come from. To burn in a pre, pull out the power tube, leave the pre plugged in, and leave the unit on for 72ish hours. Very low risk of any issues there.

@WaveTheory Gotcha. Wanted to make sure it was safe to walk away from. LOL

Power tube believe or not can make a huge difference as much as the preamp tube. 6as7g, warm and holographic, 7236, solid state sound fast and precise, 6080 warm and quite, nice dark background… So yeah, don’t skip rolling the power tubes

6080 - Low Gain
6AS7G - Medium Gain
7236/5998 - High Gain

Actually all of those sound really good. I was looking at the Shungang Natural Sound ones for the preamp as well.
