Decent open back headphones/ DAC for gaming

Hi everyone, I am currently looking for a pair of decent open back headphones for mainly gaming (casual to competitive) usually play Rainbow 6 siege, Borderlands 3, Pubg and every battlefield game known to man.

I already have a little bear DIY valve headphone amp ( which is a good few years old, but still does the job, but also looking to upgrade. I have my heart set on the fiio E10K, if anyone has any other recommendations I’m open to suggestions) and currently using a pair of Superlux HD 681.

I have read and watched countless reviews and videos on open back headphones from AUD ATHR70X, AKG K712 PRO, Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro (the 250 Ohm and other Ohm variants) nearly every sennheiser pair under the sun.

I would say my budget for the headset alone is roughly £250 (Which roughly works out to 321.50 USD)

Ultimately I am lost as to which direction i should go, if anyone has any recommendations please let me know, anyone’s help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Nathan.

The dt 880 250 ohm (or 600 ohm if amp permits) is great for gaming and casual use. It has a bright but balanced sound that’s pretty killer.

If you wanted a warmer sound, the hd58x is also another great all rounder

A great amp and dac combo is the fiio k5 pro, as it has great sound for a great price

In regards to the dt 880 (both the variants) most reviews have said the highs can be vary shrill and the sound stage isn’t as wide as it could be, would you say this is the case ?

and the hd 58x, again reviewers also said that the sound stage is very narrow, would you also agree?

I would say the 880 is bright but not to the level of the 990 which can be a lot for some people. I would also say it is wider then most headphones, but yes it is not the widest headphone ever (I personally wouldn’t want that anyway)

The 58x is a bit more intimate but is still wider then some closed backs.

Both of these are great for gaming with imo the 880 being the better choice for a competitive advantage. The 58x is also pretty good but the 880 is a bit easier to place sounds with

At the 150-200 USD range these are pretty hard to beat for gaming imo.

There is the ad700x which imo is excellent for competitive gaming but they have issues with comfort and also don’t work well with some music types, where the aforementioned options are better suited for a more mixed variety of usage
