I have the timeless and I really enjoy them, I’m interested in looking into eq-ing to experience different sound signatures and I believe the 5k has a lot of eq presets that I can get?
Is the 5k the right choice if the timeless does well with eq and is there anything else that is an even better option, surely there’s something that’s come out since the 5k has been around for a while already?
Any IEM will do well with EQ because 1) they’re very easy to drive so it’s easy to create headroom on the majority of sources, 2) you’re never going to be listening to them loud enough to where boosts will put you in range of distortion, and 3) in my opinion, because IEMs have very unique interactions with each person’s ear anatomy, EQ is more necessary with IEMs than headphones.
When you EQ, you’re doing three things: 1. Fixing objective errors in the IEM measurement, 2. Adjusting to your personal preference, and 3. Adjusting to compensate for your unique ear anatomy. With that being said, some IEMs will be easier to adjust than others because they have fewer sharp peaks and dips in their response, which will interact unpredictably in the ear. The Timeless will be more finicky than something like the Truthear Nova or Simgot EM6L for this reason. Those peaks also make it more difficult to match to another IEM frequency response.
The 5k is absolutely the right choice. No other portable solution comes close to its EQ functionality.
Thank you that’s pretty much all the type of info I was hoping to get about this. So I’m on the right track with the 5k. With the timeless being less ideal in terms of its peaky frequency curve, do you think it would be worthwhile to try the eq route with it?
if you have android and want to use the iems outside home then you can buy a cheap well made dongle from samsung google etc… and import all the eq presets you made on squig into poweramp or wavelet so you will save 110$ on the 5k too.
on pc use peace eq app.
