Sir George Martin’s work with The Beatles remains mind-blowing almost 60 years later. The production of this album is fantastic, and it was released in 1966, the year after I was born.
“Revolver” sounds better than about 90 percent of the albums mixed and mastered today:
Another oldie but goodie for impeccable production values – Dire Straits’ debut:
You guys are killing it with the recs… some I haven’t heard before and some I’m more than familiar with!
@tybt dude… what can I say? It’s very atmospheric, ethereal, spatial…. I listened to about 4 minutes of that first track and man oh man, it kind of gave me the scary vibes! Haha good stuff. Experimental usually isn’t my thing, but I’ll give it more of shot!
@Sonofholhorse that is FUNKY! I listened to about 3 songs on way home from work, I like it! Going to dive in deeper when I have the chance - thanks, Guy!
@MMag05 you can always count on Mags with the recs… I’m going to dive into the stuff from Stick Figure, I’ve never heard their stuff before
@Con493 Nice! What’s your favorite song off of RAM? Mine is Touch - what a song
@pk500 my daily reminder to give Radiohead a shot… thanks, Paul - I swear I’ve heard so much about their production and I always mean to take a day to listen to their stuff, it always seems to slip my mind.
And of course, Revolver… my favorite album from the boys. I have a special relationship with the Beatles. I discovered them my self when I was about 12 or 13 and become obsessed - my dad was never a Beatles guy, the only songs he likes from them are Come Together and Strawberry Fields Forever lol their music is so much deeper post Help. They genuinely changed music forever - George Martin was the man in the studio. Total legend.
Psydub? I think. If you get the chance, try to listen to the entire set, “Behind Closed Eyelids” is truly special.
That entire album is one of my go to’s when I get on the cross trainer for a heavy workout! …or chill with gummies
Please do brotha! I’d love for you to experience the feeling I get listening to Stick Figure. Do me a favor when you listen to him. Get a quiet corner, sit back on the couch and let your body melt into it, close your eyes and just let your head and body be weightless. Take a few deep breathes and just get lost in the dub.
The whole album just sinks into your soul if you let it in. Some stand outs are Old Sunrise, Paradise and Edge of the Ocean. Though you want to release your negative energy and the feel good flow let Stepping Stones reach deep into you.
Hahah I like me some Haribos but I know those aren’t the gummies you’re talking about
I’ll have to make sure I’m in the right state of mind in the right environment to really experience this kind of sound. It’s not the best when you’re drained from work, that’s for sure
I need this right about now… the wife is going back to work in about a week after being out for 6+ months so I’m looking forward to my super duper early morning listening sessions again… those get the day started right. I’ll have to bookmark this for one of those mornings for sure
Man I don’t even no how to explain it. When you hit that state of mind the whole song just becomes seamless. Like there’s no individual parts it’s just the cohesive energy of blissfulness flooding you. It’s such this surreal feeling of tranquility it’s the reggae state of mind. I legit have been nearly induced into an almost tranced hypnotized state playing through the album.
You weren’t supposed to copy my Homework (bad pun, sorry). But yeah, I really adore that song’s ability to transport me off the planet and float in space. So many awesome details. Also, where it’s placed on the album is just right for a full listen through.
That’s the song if I’m evaluating gear that makes or breaks it for me.
Had a tough time with this one. That Daft Punk record is so well produced, and so good. I really enjoy most of the HAIM albums, and they’re pretty well produced. A lot of the stuff I like isn’t so well recorded. I’ll just post some of the albums I tend to come back to
Always felt like the Neptune’s production was missing something, but they really shine on the Origin and Deuce. Been revisiting this album a lot lately
I’ll have a listen to one of these albums on my way to work today, thanks, Paul!
Sgt. Pepper’s is a fantastic album, don’t get me wrong, but I just think the transition period between their classic boy band stuff into their psychedelic era is really defined in Revolver. Rubber Soul gave us a taste with a few tracks but Revolver is where they really started to get experimental.
In reality, my favorite Beatles Album overall is Let It Be… Naked but if I’m just going by the OG albums within the 60s, Revolver definitely takes it for me.
A bit of a twist on this, an album I use that DOESN’T sound great (i.e. far from HiFi recording) on anything but makes for a great baseline test based on how well gear plays it DESPITE that:
Madness - One Step Beyond…
Their albums after this (even the follow-up, Absolutely) were all mixed much better.
Additional honorable mentions for this category goes to The Reatards - Not Fucked Enough and basically everything Guitar Wolf ever made.
I think tonight I’ll be granted some desk listening so I’ll be diving deep into some of these recs, thanks boys!
@pk500 I was able to enjoy some of Ok Computer today to and from work. Nothing is quite jumping out at me in terms of toe tapping but I can tell this is a phenomenal album front to back. The production and mastering is obviously top notch.
I will say that I screwed up and changed tips on the Estrella before leaving to work without checking the seal and I think it screwed up my left channel… whoops. Will tip roll again tonight and use a proper set up so that I have the right impression of the stuff from Radio Head!
