So im still new to the hole audio realm of things, but I game a lot and listen to music on the side
I have been using a modified balanced pair of Dt990 pro and a magnius and modius stack would these end up being my endgame do all be all pair of headphones or should I look at something else for my music and just have two pairs of cans for both purposes?
oh lord no
Bit early to say, but there are many alternatives outside of the hd here⦠the 800s keeps getting quite a bit of hype I have been seeing for gamers due to its soundstage qualities⦠but most games canāt even use 75% of what this headphone is capable of so its straight up overkill in many many cases. It Could very well be an endgame for you if you like brighter headphones with insanely large soundstages though⦠I would recommend trying to audition one if you really want to know for certain. Otherwise just upgrade the 990 to the 1990/T1 2nd gen whichever you prefer⦠as they will most likely suit you for a very long time in gaming sessions considering what they are capable of and price / performance. 8xx being quite new here Id say its far to early to say anything for certain as most dont even have this headphone yetā¦
I think im ok with my Dt990s for gaming and I think I have found my choice for a end game pair of cans. I think im going to end going to end up with a pair of lcd-x because of the style and genre of music I listen to. Lot of rock and metal occasionally pop and rap. I want more out of a headphone for music and im happy with the dt990s there already modded and im doing a headband swap from dekoni and a pad swap as well for the time being. Thank you guys for the awnsers.
As a user of the HD 800 S and a gamer I understand completely the advantage of the wide sound stage. The games in particular that take advantage of those capabilites are first person shooters like Valorant, Apex, and COD: Warzone. These games benefit dramatically from being able to hear exactly where a gun shot or foot step is coming from especially when coming from behind, below or above the player. Being able to tell the difference between the various gun shots sounds help a player understand the potential number of opponents in the area and the type of weapons they are using. Being able to hear the difference in footstep sounds can help you understand if there are one, two or three opponents in the area. I am by no means competitive, but these headphones are seriously flying under the radar for these games.
The 800s can be deceptively large on a lot of games and can sound like some enemies are too far to be a problem but in reality theyāre a lot closer.
^ this is the other issue. Either the headphone will appear too large or it will just max out the games audio engine capability and not really use all this headphones capable of. T1 2nd generation does this same thing where in smaller games like apex⦠the soundstage is overkill and infact is a bit too large causing some slight complications
The issue is that people are practically brainwashed into thinking their best choice to go with for gaming is headsets⦠when in reality there are plenty of actual headphones that do the job much better and can even save the person money. HD800 is one of the few āendgameā cans due to what its capable of but I would never recommend it to someone less they were pretty much just playing larger games like arma, planetside, tarkov, etc
I havenāt noticed this in games like COD or even open world games like Rust where I can watch people walking up on me and perceive the difference between what I am seeing and what I would expect to hear. Even games like New World (just a few weeks ago) the perception of distance felt right on. Would the DAC have any impact on this?
The difference is more noticeable when you have the other headphones that are known to be capable of the same aspects. Arya / Sundara, T1 2nd gen / DT 1990, Some of the Audeze, Harmonicdyne Zeus, etc. In games like cod the hd 800S isnāt remotely using all of its capabilities⦠this is very noticeable if you go from cod to tarkov with the headphone as the expansiveness of the sound is massive in difference. The hd800 is more soundstage and air than anything⦠much like the sundara and arya are capable of packed with very good imaging.
There are many cases where in just cod you can get similar or the same results from using the cheaper sundara or even just a regular Sennheiser 560s in some cases compared to the hd800s. It wonāt have that air quality no, but the similarities are marginal enough to write off needing such a higher end headphone in that particular regard. However, if were talking Warzone, Planetside, Arma, Tarkov, battlefield, Hunt, etc those games where you have a very large playing field⦠large soundstages really come into play⦠however, realistically the only current shooter of our generation capable of fully capitalizing on the full kit of an hd800 is Tarkov over there.
That isnāt to say you shouldnāt use an hd800. But it can cause some complications due to just how large it likes to space sounds out⦠more so when the sound engine of the game itself is garbage
Dacs will but to a smaller extent to the amplifier. The amplifier can govern spatial recreation and even cases of your imaging.
Now I want to give Tarkov a shot.
Do it, but be prepared to not have fun
Depends on how good you are at patience, listening, and reactive shooting topped off with how good your vision really is. That game is punishing as hell.
Sure, most punishing game Iāve ever played, but Iām nearly at 2000hours in it, so I guess I love it
So addictive and rewarding if it works out fine for me ā¦
the first day you play tarkov is the first day you realize youāve never played anything like tarkov before. itāll hit you like a fucking truck and itāll drive you insane and then one day itāll click and tarkov will become so addicting itāll hurt.
Zās recent video testing the Dekoni pads on this is really making me consider grabbing some finally
Here is Crinicleās first impression it was not that favorable. Still would like to see some more impressions out there.
He even provided an EQ profile to get the sound signature to anyone who was debating if it is worth getting if they already own one of the other versions.
the 1-2.5k dip is weird, could that be a stock pad thing?
weird dip in the bass⦠massive drop off there at the treble. looking more and more like I wont be interested in this one.
I was contacted by Drop and told I will receive a review unit within the next couple weeks or so. Could be longer.
Iāve been ordering and recording playback of a bunch of Sennheiser headphones just in preparation for the 8XX. Iām going to do a big showdown and comparison of all of them, with sound demos.
I already have the 800S and put them at the top of my ranks. Really suits my tastes very nicely. So Iām excited to see what theyāve done to this 8XX actually.
FYI, hereās all the models Iāve been recording/will record for the upcoming video:
⢠HD600
⢠HD650
⢠HD6XX
⢠HD800 S
⢠HD8XX
⢠PC38X (why a gaming headset? Pure curiosity)
Hopefully itāll help many people in the community to decide what sound is best for them.
If anyone is interested in that video, itāll be up on my channel:
Sorry for the plug but it seems appropriate.
