Dunu Titan X Review
A budget Titan?
Welcome folks! For the last days I sat down with the Titan X, worked with it, walked with it, ate with it and fell asleep with it more than I’d like to admit. They’ve been in my ears during both short and long listening sessions. Now let me tell You all what I think about Dunu’s latest super pocket friendly 35$ iems.
( this review unit was kindly provided by HiFiGo, however I am free to say whatever I think about this iem )
Who is this for?
If You’re a music enthusiast on a budget, a student or a parent who wishes to make a gift to your younger ones without breaking a bank, be it for music enjoyment or gaming, please do read on.
Build:
Dunu does not disappoint in Build Quality and even though the understated, industrial looks with the only „bold” accent being the X symbol might or may not appeal to You. I doubt anyone can complain about the build quality of these little guys.
As it’s solid, all metal construction with two venting/pressure relief holes, which ensure no pressure buildup or any cracking/popping noise during insertion. - ( This should come as standard in this day and age, yet some manufacturers still cannot deliver in this regard. )
The Cable is well made, very soft to the touch and I did not have too much tangle issues with it. The added velcro strap makes it easier to maintain when storing them away in the included pouch. It’s 4 strands of single crystal copper that is silver plated, quality stuff and a true rarity in this price bracket.
The only „downside” is it being non modular 3.5 mm single ended termination. Given the target and price point, this is very understandable as we get a whole lot for how little this actually costs. As most folks will be plugging them in straight into phones/consoles/basic dongle dac amps.
There is also a USB-C version available, that has a dac/amp built in, a simple all in one plug and play solution for a few $ more.
Titan X comes with 3 sets of ear tips, with the black ones being On as default.
These iems are very comfortable to wear and despite being heavier than resin/plastic competition they did not tire my regular sized ear canals at all, even after 5-6 hours of wearing them straight on. The metal shells act as passive radiators and the venting holes keep optimal pressure. The vent holes being on the inside part- facing the ear won’t introduce much wind noise while out and about as well. Dunu has You covered!
Now let’s get to the arguably most important thing for the future listener, their sound characteristics.
I’ll try to stay simple and on point in this section as this is first and foremost an entry product that is supposed to bring people in and most likely introduce them to this hobby.
The Titan X sounds good and is quite a versatile iem, straight to the point. Is it worth your time and money? I strongly believe it is. Would I recommend it? Yes, I would and I will. However let’s dig a bit deeper into this for those who would like to know little more.
It is a bassy and mid forward presentation, which means that vocalists voice will feel closer to you rather that stay somewhere far back in the mix.
The sound is dynamic, focused more on macro details rather than on very minute nuances. The bass is one of it’s stronger points, while having more mid bass presence than many other iems, I found it to still be quite well controlled while using the grey ( balanced ) or candy eartips. Both of these were my preferred and this review is based around my experience with these tips on.
Black tips feel more bassy, but they cramp the sound a bit and make the soundstage smaller, that’s why I opted to rule them out as this is not my preference.
MIDS:
I believe this is the only area that some people may have a bit of an issue with.
What I mean about that? Well the 3-3,5 kHz region on Titan X’s frequency response graph spikes even above the well know Harman Curve.
That means that on some songs the vocalists voice might feel a bit „shouty”.
I believe I know why Dunu did this. First of all to let the mids stay over the bass shelf and not lose clarity while the second reason is gaming oriented I assume. As clear mids do present footsteps better.
If this at all bothers You, lowering the mentioned frequencies by 1,5-2 dB should solve it
Due to this tuning choice Voices feel more intimate and depending on song/mastering can feel very emotional. Although the male voices are presented quite well, this set clearly let’s the female singers shine the most.
Highs:
Macro oriented, non offensive to my ears. I’m used to much more expensive sets and their ability to dig out every bit of detail out of the track, but this is a well made entry-budget offering that is meant to simply bring enjoyment at an affordable price so let’s keep our expectations at check.
Imaging and precision is quite good, but it’s not going to be pin point laser focus type of iem. Just keep that in mind. I’m a casual gamer these days and tested it with a few games like Red Dead Redemption on my Nintendo Switch 2. Had no issues locating where the shots or footsteps were originating from with my eyes closed, so they will definitely give You an advantage versus using Your TV’s or Switch’s tiny speakers.
Overall I can say I did enjoy my time with Titan X and can easily recommend this iem to anyone curious enough and wishing to either try iems for the first time or simply expand their collection with a good allrounder.
I did test it on a few sources, but most of my time I got it connected to FIIO Snowsky Tiny B. As a person who has a few much more expensive sources that I tested them on as well. Yet I focused on a well made entry dac/amp that would be a more realistic choice for most people buying this iem.
On top of that it has an EQ option that will allow to play around with the mods tuning I mentioned above. That being said this iem scales a bit with better sources, I liked it a lot paired with my beloved Shanling UA3, or the Shanling M7T dap with tubes engaged ![]()
All in all, this is a very solid iem, with premium build at a very affordable price, with barely anything to complain about. It’s a good allrounder and a comfortable one at that. A full on recommendation from me.
Even if there might exist a product on the market that possibly could compete with sound delivery it’s hard to beat the Titan X as an overall package.
You can buy this iem on HifiGo, there is an option to buy them directly with Dunu’s famous S&S tips. I recommend this store as I’m a long time customer myself and had nothing but pleasant experience with purchasing any audio goods.
