FLAC 16/96 kHz?

Huh? Didn’t know such an animal existed. Got this from Bandcamp today. Windows file property shows it as 3072 kbps DVD Quality.

On another note, given all the MQA talk and other topics on DACs decoding, would it make sense to have a Technology and Standards category?

Bueller? Bueller?

Flac is agnostic to bitrate/depth, so it’s what the original was recorded at.
Though most places went 24bit before they went to 96KHz, but that was a DVD Audio format I believe.

So it’s not “wasted” high resolution? I didn’t know you could have a meaningful upgrade to 16/48 without going to a higher bitrate. Wonder what the technical demarcation was. Thank’s for the response, I’d never seen this before.

When 44.1/16 was the only playback medium, most studios were recording at 48/16, and later went to 96/16 and 96/24, though during the SACD/DVD Audio period there were some studios using DSD directly.

High frequency/bitdepth ADC’s are much harder to make that DAC’s, so the transitions happened as silicon got better. It’s also why DS DAC’s and ADC’s became the norm, easier and cheaper to make accurate.

We can argue if you can hear a difference, but it’s not really the point.
