Havenāt really delved into cables but I have tried hart, periapt, and dragonā¦ gotta say I preferred both periapt and hart over the dragonā¦ cheaper too. I havenāt gotten to oidio or corpse
I donāt plan on chasing anymore cables. Iāll break out the Hartās at some point to compare them to the Dragons. Also, I got the mgās from Moon.
I have noticed that they seem louder than the Elex at the same settings.
Significantly louder, or just enough to be noticeable? Because the Elex do have a slightly higher impedance.
Itās more than noticeable.
I knew that Iād found them to be ridiculously easy to drive, but I thought that was just the case with all the Focal headphones. I know my brother still hasnāt made his mind up on whether or not heās going to get the Elex or find something else, but if he does Iām definitely going to borrow them for a bit and compare.
I sold my Elex as soon as I received the Clear MG and heard it. For me, the Elex was always too bright and shouty with not enough bass extension for my tastes. I couldnāt listen to the Elex for long without fatigue. The Elex always had great sense of slam, stage, imaging and detail. More so than most of my other headphones. Looks, build and comfort were all outstanding on the Elex with the FOCAL headphone design.
The Clear MG corrects all the issues I had with the Elex leaving me with a headphone Iām having difficulty finding any issues with what so ever. Listening last night, I was paying a lot of attention to the Clear MGās bass slam and extension in regards to the midrange and found myself asking what else could I want in an open-back headphone?
I can agree on thatā¦ I had those same issues on the elex I felt the bass was the biggest lacking featureā¦ I love the sound of the elex but the low end was missingā¦ you can EQ them to fix that up of course but I still feel the clear mg naturally does this better. The OG clear was already a good step above the elex anyway but I feel this is better in that regard as it has that more balanced sound to and much better extensionsā¦ not to mention the detail and level of clarity is quite a bit better over elex
First nights impressions. It is musically better than the Elex in every way, though I do agree with Josh. It is a little treble light for me. The Elex fatigued me a bit in the beginning, but it passed. So far the only thing Iām questioning is, is it as fun? Iām sure this will pass (placebo) but Iām keeping my Elex to compare in a few weeks and see. I might just keep it anyways. It was my first HP love. I might not sleep tonight!
I go back and forth on this. On my Bifrost2/Jot2 rig, the Clear MG feels a tad dark in the treble. But I canāt deal with overly bright headphones or IEMs, so this is very nice and not fatiguing what so ever and my preferred listening experience.
On my SMSL SU-9 and THX 789 AAA rig, the Clear MG is teetering on being almost too bright.
The Clear has always been a headphone that scales with and reveals other equipment extremely well, and the Clear MG is obviously following in the footsteps of its predecessor. I feel the Clear MG is a better starting point than the OG Clear was and if it needs a slight nudge here or there for your personal preferences, a little EQ could never hurt for your listening enjoyment.
I couldnāt stand listening to the Elex without EQ. Too shouty. It collected dust on my shelf. My Aeolus always won out vs the Elex. But the Elex had better technicalities (imaging esp) that I enjoyed vs the Aeolus.
I only have one chain. I sold my Sdac & 789 to move up. I was quite happy with the Bifrost 2 > Jotunheim 2 chain with the elex. Thatās why I trusted you and @alphamarshan with this purchases. As I listen, it really is starting to destroy the listening experience on the elex. Itās so different, I need to understand it.
As earlier stated in this thread, the treble and treble detail is there, itās just not in your face (as forward) as it was with the Elex. Give yourself some time to adjust. The Elex + 789 have been pounding your ears with upper frequencies/harshness that are less forward and smoother with the Clear MG. Listen for and enjoy the less metallic timbre and relaxed upper frequencies of the Clear MG. The Clear MG also extends the bass so much better than the Elex but retains all the dynamic slam.
The Bifrost 2 + Jot2 sound less digital and more analog to my ears. A smoother listening experience. Iām not a dac/amp expert like @M0N, but Iāve really come to enjoy the organic sound Iām getting from the Schiit gear. I really appreciate his suggestions on this gear for the price range.
I suggest just taking your time, listen and enjoy the music and let your brain and ears adjust and enjoy.
How is the comfort on this headphone compared to the 1990 Pro and 6xx for people? (To take two fairly common open-backs that I happen to ownā¦)
Heard Focals wereā¦ not heavy but also not light.
Is there any creakiness or noise in the movement of the cups, also?
personally? I despise the comfort of the 6xxā¦ the design is just so narrow for me personally. 1990 pro is a little harsh but after break in its very nice and pad swaps on the 1990 are ridiculously good. Focal Clear MG here has a very high grade memory foam, light frame, and the comfort is one you can feasibly sit with for hours on hand without really much issueā¦ most of their headphones have extremely good levels of comfort
I had some slight noise on my first elexā¦ but my clears on both my OG and now MG here no noise.
From all the conversation.
There really is only one direction when the ELEX are sold or they break. Itās the Clear (OG / MG).
But in the mean time. I still enjoy them very much and with the local prices, They are clear winners.
Itās nearly 50% difference so thatās kinda is lot in principle. Not in audio money.
My thoughts are the complete opposite in regards to the 6XX. I never had any issues with their comfort, even when first taking them out of the box. For my head they are more comfortable to wear than the Clear Mg. The Mg are noticeably heavier than the 6XX, but after a couple of days adjusting to them I can wear them all day without issue. As an aside, Iāve never tired the 1990 Pro, so I canāt comment on those.
I have a relatively larger size head with quite large earsā¦ the 6xx is more on ear to me than it is an over ear headphone and the typical sennheiser skull crashing headclamp didnāt help either. Comfort wise usually sennheisers are a hard pass for me personally, doesnāt change the fact that they are good headphones though
Head size can definitely make a difference. If my head were any smaller than it is I would have had to return the Clear Mg for not fitting.
How do you like the pairing? Have you tried your Elexās on them or have you already gotten rid of those for Clears?
I had already sold the Elex before purchasing the Singxer
