šŸ”¶ Focal Clear Mg

I think I will be waiting on Schiits upcoming $1k amp they have in the works lmao. Considering that I became a fan of jot and asgard and that the bifrost 2 is my go-to dac in my setup… I have high hopes that will be my endgame amp they have in the works. Provided of course it agrees with the clears… do yourselves a favor… don’t run this off a liquid platinum… it butchers this thing especially when using bifrost 2… overly smooth, overly warm, veils up the mids

I’m still probably going to stay away from tubes for the time being, just because I don’t want to get into rolling tubes, but that does look nice.

I’m glad you said that, because I’d been considering the Liquid Plat if I caught it on sale, lol. How sure are we that Schiit is working on that? Cause if they are working on a ~$1000 SS amp then I’m definitely interested in that.

I haven’t tried the Ananda, but I own the HE6se that are modded (grills and pads). To my ears, the Clear MG is a more technical headphone than the HE6se. The HE6se are overall brighter with a larger soundstage, but they’re different enough to be complimentary.

I’m still waiting on my amp for the HE6se, so my opinion could definitely change.

was commented on over in the rumors and releases thread they were just seen making remarks about their upcoming projects… i believe it was the LOKI MAX which is the bigger loki(need that for myself), and a few above $1k units and I think one budget new entry. if I recall one of those amps was like an 8 tube amp

It’s actually 10 tubes. Here’s the prototype:

It should be interesting. Loki Maximus, CD transport ($1200?), and not mentioned by Jason, but a Gumby 2 is rumored.

I have a G111 in the mail. Paired with a Bifrost 2 I’ve been running for a bit now (in love with it).

Hoping the G111 can give me some quasi-tube-like qualities, i.e. staging w/o sacrificing naturalness etc. Seems like it’s good for that.

Also want an amp of higher quality than, say, my Asgard 3, that only has SE outs. I don’t want to be neurotic about having various kinds of cables. For my sanity.

Any sense of whether G111 pairs nicely with Focal MG?

I remember hearing Jason say something about the possibility of a bigger Loki in one of the videos he put out, but I hadn’t heard any of the other rumors. I just knew they had gaping holes in their pricing stack that would make something like a $700-$1000 SS amp make sense.

Oh, and I should probably clarify my remark about staying away from tube amps. I meant OTL tube amps. I’d be perfectly willing to get a hybrid like the Liquid Plat or the Lyr 3 where i didn’t need to worry as much about finding the right tubes for it.

Thank you. Very good to know. I haven’t had the OG Clear in a long time so I can’t compare the MG directly to it and I don’t have crazy high end amps and dacs. I just have the Schiit Jot2 and Bifrost2 and an SMSL SU-9 and THX AAA 789. I know for a fact that the Clear MG sounds very different on my two stacks playing the same music. Alarmingly so.

lmao still ridiculously overkill to the point of being hilarious. That had better be named something warm… cause thats a hell of a lot of tube

will absolutely be buying this if its good enough… I love my little loki it sits in my living room.

not sure about this one really…

im sure theres a few things under the hood to be released this year at the rate their going… going to keep a close eye on them nonetheless

I don’t own crazy high ends yet… my highest amp right now is my violectric + soekris setup. Getting there.

didnt try g111 but tried g103 which is like an alternative to asgard 3… works fine to my ear kept the signature well enough… since g111 is a step up I would think itd be up there like the jot

Thats sorta what Im hoping for because Id love to own the MG as a compliment to my Ananda.

I’m guessing that it’s different enough.

Cheers!

 Been sitting with these for gaming of late now… unfortunately I am not at all impressed with them in this particular use case… the soundstage is limiting and the lack of detail retrieval due to more emphasis in the lows and mids, compared to OG clear, seems to be clouding up placements… Not to say it’s not usable but it’s something I am noticing as a gamer as well as an audiophile… for music this thing is great just doesn’t seem as good for a competitive gamer. I might be leaning more towards a recommendation towards elex or OG clear if one wanted the Focal as their competitive headphone over this one in particular… It doesn’t best the performance of my T1 in this particular use case whatsoever

That’s interesting. I don’t game, but I find the MG to be more detailed/resolving than the OG in music listening.

Often times peaks in FR (4-6k) enhance the perception of detail, I wonder if this is what makes the OG seem more detailed for gaming.

Good to know. I don’t game with any of my audiophile gear anyway. I play some Playstation but have dedicated gaming headsets with mics for that. I use Astros.

I agree, even though I don’t play anything competitive, I wouldn’t think they’d be all that great because they don’t have a particularly wide soundstage. Imaging is great, and I love using them in more casual single-player games, but I’d want something else if I ever started playing online fps games where I needed more staging.

Looking over at this post and staring down at my Magni Heresy and Modi 3 lol…

at least I have a Jot2, Modius on order that I will get sometime in 2021

I also agree. I game quite a bit so whatever headphones I use…I use for music and gaming. I must admit that I have almost reached for my HD Zeus a few times when gaming but I can’t help just how fantastic the Clear MG Pro’s are for everything. Limited soundstage but detail and pinpoint imaging (to my ears anyway) is a nice bonus. Still, flip off the game and kick some music on and it is pure bliss.

Oh…and to add to that…just like music, these headphones will definitely make you realize what games have terrible audio performance. Yikes.

Day 3… The sound stage may be small, but everything is where it should be.

Edit to add, do they really record this music for speaker? I’ve had a nice system for years, and haven’t heard a good amount what I hear now.

I’m actually not even sure what day I’m on, maybe 3 weeks? I’ve just been enjoying these so much. They just blow everything else I’ve listened to out of the water on this setup.

I’m trying to find something about them to be critical of, lol. Haven’t tried them for gaming so can’t really speak to that; I guess I hear what y’all are saying about soundstage but as long as it isn’t claustrophobic, soundstage is generally the attribute I’m least concerned with. It seems sufficient enough for me and is greater than on the 6XX.
