šŸ”¶ Focal Clear Mg

Unless they did something different than the rest of their line with the Mg it’s cake:

Usually Focal have standardised on the clips that allows you to switch between pads for different models, so Clear, Elex, Elegia, etc pads can be swapped interchangeably.

As @Alan_Cronin and @Blackscreen said, it’s super easy. Popped right off and the new ones pop right in. Took less than 10 seconds per pad lol.

I still prefer the stock pads, and they sound the best with them, but the velour is a little change of pace.

Pretty interesting comparisons from Josh…

So in that video, Josh mentions that he thinks the Clear MG is a bit dark-sounding. (I didn’t catch what setup he’s pairing them with to test.) For people who’ve heard them both, is the OG Clear brighter than the MG, or are they about the same in that regard?

(I own an Elex and I definitely don’t think of the Elex as sounding dark, but I haven’t heard a Clear yet.)

OG is brighter, MG is more linear in FR, but also more detailed with greater speed, imo. MG also has more ā€œairā€ (above 10k) which also make the MG a Neutral-Bright headphone, but closer to neutral overall than OG.

I thought the MG was warm, not bright? Just from what I read, don’t own, haven’t heard.

It has a very linear FR extending into the sub bass. I think that’s why people feel it’s warm (as most headphones roll-off in the lower range).
There’s also a slight elevation in the lower mids that adds a bit of body to vocals that also can make them seem warm.

The treble is pretty linear with the exception of the elevation in the air frequency which can be bright sounding with some recordings/sensitivity to that frequency.

That’s why I feel they’re still Neutral-Bright, just not as pronounced as the OG.

Maybe a touch warm. Nothing like the Aeolus. The OG Clear was more clinical than the MG.

I agree with @ValentineLuke 's description in general.

Got my custom Hart Cable in today. The stock cables have gone back into the box and I shan’t be using them anymore .

What’s the warmer of the two: the Clear or the Clear MG? From reading this thread and some other reviews, I was under the impression the Clear MG was warmer, more 6xx-like. But after watching and reading some other reviews, it sounds like the Clear MG has brighter treble?

The Clear MG is warmer. It also has more ā€œairā€ than the OG, which may seem brighter to some, but the OG has more elevated treble overall compared to the MG (with the exception of the around 10k air frequencies).

Where you would put the brightness of the OG Clear, also? Do you think it’s, say, as bright as the DT 1990 Pro?

I haven’t heard the DT1990, but I think it’s safe to say that it’s no where near the treble energy of the 1990 according to ears I trust whom have heard both.

The Clear OG have some elevated treble but, but it’s not that bad. I’m just slightly treble sensitive, so it was enough for me to part ways with them, but it’s an excellent overall headphone.

I was just lucky that Focal released them MG that’s more to my preferences after I parted with my OG.

Also, I did find a tube/tube hybrid helped to smooth out that little bit of elevated treble energy. I had a Lyr 3 when I had my OG, and it’s was a good pairing.

Really wonder if I’d prefer the OG’s slight treble spiciness (at the cost of the slight metallic timber people mention the OG having) or the MG’s smoother more rounded off quality. Guess there’s little way of knowing till I try.

I’d feel bad ordering from Headphones only to maybe send it back but… that’s sort of why they have that policy after all…

I officially found probably my only complaint with this headphone.

Headphone creak. I thought at first maybe it was the default cable (coiled cable with the MG Pro) that was causing it…but its just the headphone itself. Just every now and then when I move my head or adjust the headphone does have an annoying creak sound to it.

I heard this happened on the OG Clear too…anyone confirm?

Also, this is just a minor annoyance but by no means what I consider a defect or anything to write to Focal about.

Still my daily driver and haven’t switched to anything else since I bought and started listening to these. Someday when Schiit has stock again I’ll finally experience these on a better stack then my basic schiit stack.

…that creak though… lol

It happens with all Focal. The Utopia actually creek the most.

It’s doesn’t happen to often with my pair.

Mine creak a little bit. I can’t hear it at all when playing music though. Most of my headphones have little quirks like this. I had a gaming headset that had a metal band that ran over the of my head. It use to vibrate and I could hear it while playing music. And it wasn’t quiet. Horrible design.

It looked something like this…

I wonder if some kind of lubrication would help? I also have no idea where the creak comes from, since I have to be very still and slightly move to hear it. Is it up in the yoke mechanism or the cup swivel?

EDIT: I just gave all the joints and moving parts a little exercise. Put it back on my head and now I can’t get it to creak.

Good to know…you can tell I’m a dad when I just thought of an analogy to put it all in perspecitve…

Since I am using a Schiit stack on a Focal MG Pro…guess I’m up Schiit’s Creek. (cheesy drum roll sound)
