šŸ”· Focal Elegia

This sounds all too familiar lol

May have to get a balanced cable for the r3 pro but then again youā€™ll probably want to replace the focal cable anyways lol would be a pretty sweet mobile setup I imagine :+1:

Man, I just received my Elegias on Tuesday and I have quite the opposite experience vs the Teaks. Everything on the Elegia so far sounds less natural - I have to EQ down the honky mids quite a bit to make them work. It sounds much less lively as wellā€¦ not impressed vs the Teaks, which are wider and have a better tonality to my ears on all genres. Not noticing any more detail in the Elegias either.

Still listening, but probably will return themā€¦

:man_shrugging:t2: Iā€™ve never found the Elegias mids honky, just forward in a way that seems pleasant and resolving. The only EQ I use on them consistently is a bass boost. Thatā€™s not to take anything away from the Teaks ā€“ Iā€™ve actually been switching between them for about a month. The Teaks to me are more of a ā€˜funā€™ signature with its prominent mid-bass, though the treble is occasionally just a tad sharp for my taste.

I think they would be the perfect closed back for me if they had the sound of the Teak - so itā€™s a bummer for me. I love the build and fit - but I hear the mid bloat and tin can vocals too on many tracks, so Iā€™ll have to send back :frowning:

Just curious, whatā€™s your source path/gear? Iā€™ve heard a touch of metallic timbre occasionally, but never honky or overly metallic.

Iā€™ve tried it with flac, 320kbps streaming, etcā€¦ plugged directly into phone, over BTR5 and Zen DAC on desktop which is where I primarily listened. So nothing too crazy, but I was under the impression that these were fairly easy to drive. I mostly noticed the tonality issues going between the Teaks and Elegias, so Iā€™m sure itā€™s primarily the different timbre of the two.

Iā€™ve had more neutral leaning closed-backs before like the NDH20s and never had this type of issue. :man_shrugging:

Having heard both, Elegia can have a tinge of brightness at times, but still have a solid even response, where as teaks are a tinge warmer, but still nice and aggressive. The elegias may win in dynamics and details. Both are pretty great in their own ways. Bass on teaks is really good for quantity, where as elegia bass is great for details. Since in my mind, both are just great, so all i said above is no way negative to them. I liked the timbre on the teaks more, just felt more organic, If you like the teaks, I would def reccomend the nighthawks as an openback compliment to them, and a dt880 or t1 to compliment your elegia.

I wish someone would compare Focal Elegia + Sheepskin Pads VS Focal Radiance. Im especially interested with the bass between those two. Andrew said that the Radiance had more bass than Elegia, but he only used the Stock Pads of the Elegia.

Andrew say the Radiance is the warmer headphone of all the High-end Focals (i.e. Elegia and up) because of the tonal balance. Itā€™s not just that the Radiance have more bass, itā€™s bass is more elevated compared to other frequencies, so the overall presentation ends up different.

That being said, if you look in the headphones forum you can look at the graphs and compare. FR isnā€™t everything in a headphone, but if you just want to compare bass quantity itā€™s a good starting point.

Edit: removed a link I didnā€™t intended to make, sorry.

Do the elegia have that clipping sound issue, that others do. If so I think Iā€™ll pass.

I havenā€™t experienced any clipping issue.

On a side note I just purchase a hip dac and that pairs with the elegia really well I have to say. Gives it the warmth which was lacking in the stock tuning. And if u want, for edms and pop, switch on the x bass its glorious

I fully endorse this comment. Elegia and Hip Dac is a solid portable combo. The Hip Dac isnā€™t the most refined and detailed source, but it has good synergy with the Elegia. The Elegia also responds very well to the Xbass feature. It makes the Elegia THUMP on heavy EDM tracks.

@Lalawil: I read they were $400 a month ago, and was wondering about the issue. Iā€™ll catch one on the holiday if theirs no clipping issues.

Youā€™ll be fine, unless youā€™re listening at louder levels, 85-90db+. All the focals Iā€™ve had have been good. No clipping, unless you try and make them clip.

Havenā€™t experienced clipping at any volume levels.

No clipping issues for me, but I donā€™t listen very loud. I use mine often with a BTR5 balanced and think it sounds pretty darn good. I donā€™t use any EQ. I also wear glasses and havenā€™t had any seal issues. Just FYI.

Theyā€™ve been a few cases where they clipped at moderate volumes. Iā€™m gonna have to make sure they donā€™t. I heard about the slam and clarity focal headphones have, and it seems like itā€™s a better choice then zmf.

Iā€™ve also had no clipping issues with the elegiaā€™s. +1 for the hip dac synergy as well. Pretty solid affordable portable choice :+1:

Havenā€™t heard zmf but good punch and slam here and good dynamics. Much more affordable as well lol

Is the Elegia good enough to wear on a train or at a desk in a shared office environment? Just wondering how good the iscolation and sound bleed are?
