🔷 Focal Elegia

Got a new addition today: Dekoni Audio Elite Sheepskins. Bought them from Walmart.ca. Price was great and delivery was quick. Can’t wait to see what they do.

Excellent! I hope they work for you. Looks like the swap will be pretty straight-forward. Good luck! :+1:

I wish I could have gotten the Limited Edition Stellia’s, but they would have been double the price. If these can bass it up a bit, they would probably make the T5’s redundant.

Just started today’s listening session. Going from BF2 to Pro iCAN with no bass boost. My test list has become more bass slanted recently due to my closed back comparisons.
16 songs/one hour and three minutes of music.
Starting with stock pads. After list finishes, I change pads and play it again.
Might do the whole thing again with the Vio.

I need answers damn it!

What a difference with Sheepskin! I love the feel of the leather. Also the foam is much denser and definitely pushes my ears further away from the drivers.

I went through my list and then went through the list again with the new pads and was sure I detected a difference but then started to doubt myself.

Thankfully the swap is Very easy and quick. I listened to the Drumming Song (Florence and the Machine) and Hanginaround (Counting Crows). Then I immediately swapped pads and was blown away with these two songs.

And I don’t feel like I am losing anything from the mids or treble, at least not so far.

Now I am really excited about doing another head to head with the “improved” Elegia’s compared to the Beyer T5’s. In the first round, I couldn’t call either one an absolute winner.

I am very happy with this purchase. I bought these online from Wal-Mart.ca. It was a third party seller on there. I paid $90.00Cdn., plus tax with free shipping. Took about 4 days.
I have to admit that I am now a little curious about Dekoni’s perforated sheepskin and hybrid models. They certainly wouldn’t go to waste. I will always have Focals. The Elex’s may become Clears and the Elegia’s may become Celestee’s or Radiance’s or perhaps even Stellia’s. I love the Focal sound.

Another poor Soul that’s willingly goes down another rabbit hole XD

That is great news. I may follow suit. I know I said I wasn’t going to buy any more gear. But Pads…

Lovely pads. Yes, I can buy some of those. It’s not gear! Seriously though, I may give them a go. Appreciate the post.

Small stuff is where I’m at now. Pads for the Elegia’s, grills for the HE6se V2’s and a cheap amp/tubes to play with.

My next purchase is likely a pair of WE396a’s for my iFi.

Nice! I really liked my upgrade to the sheepskin, good to see I’m not the only one. Will say though I’m curious about the other Dekoni Pads. Resolve said in a video the only one that worked with Elegia were the sheepskin, all the other messed up bad in treble and/or bass. That’s why I choose them and I did agree with his assessment for the sound of them.

Occasionally Dekoni has this pads in B-stock so if you’re willing to wait you can find these for between $50 ~$60 IIRC. But they’re worth the full retail of $90 IMO.

(Elite Velours are in B-stock right now, for example).

The place I bought mine from (3rd party from Wal-Mart.ca) removed the sheepskins after I bought mine.
They had velour for $60.00Cdn., but I have no urge for them. I am curious about the other two though. I think the hybrid might be very interesting. Closed sheepskin on the outside, fenestrated sheepskin on the inside and velour against the ear. Sounds kind of ideal, but you never know until you try.

I just got my new Elegias in today. I ordered a new dac, amp, and hart cables too, but only the Elegia’s came today, and I just couldn’t wait. I took them upstairs and plugged them right into the little Fiio E-10K I’ve been driving my ATH-M40X’s with for the last two years.

What a difference. There’s so much information in tracks I thought I knew so well that I was utterly unaware of. Much of that information is accidental, like little footsteps or when a guitar pick encounters a string at an angle and clicks across the string before strumming the note. I can hear echos, reverbs, and ambient sounds I never thought would’ve been left into a professionally produced recording. What I am saying is these headphones resolve like nothing I’ve ever heard.

Soundstage wise, they’re broader and deeper than the ATH-M40X’s, but not transformationally so. Imaging and separation, on the other hand, is on a whole new level. It’s uncanny, almost holographic how these challenge my preconceived notions and give me a real sense of space.

New dac came in today. Has a built in amp. Solid upgrade. Less of a difference than the upgrade in headphone, but only by a sliver. I expected the headphone upgrade to be pretty big, but I expected a less stark improvement from the dac. Maybe chalk it up to how well the Elegia reacts to better sources. A pleasant surprise.

I literally spent all day listening. going on hour 14 now, and it’s 3:00 am. I’m really digging the way this setup is coming together. If the amp represents even a small improvement in the total experience, I will be happy for long enough to save and consider my next move much less hastily. Tracking # says I get to find out on Monday!

I would like to ask , can the elegia be a endgame in audio? I have the hd600 and sundara

Yes, if you like the frequency response of it then it could be. Any headphone can be endgame, endgame is not about the most expensive or technically capable (I’m not saying the Elegia isn’t technically capable) but the one that you prefer the most.

This has a good amount of detail and a mid forward sound. There is a Focal peak which adds a bit of a metallic flavour to it but if you enjoy it then it is a great headphone. I like mine.

Hello,

I definitely agree on that statement.
It not the price that dictate the endgame but rather what frequency response it pushes.

I love my hd600 but they lack a little treble definition.

I love my sundara treble …perfect however they lack mid-range fullness.
Vocals lack some body in the male region .
I like the mid-range emphasis of the hd600.

Some find the hd600 mid-range fatiguing …
That s not my case.

Ideally a in-between ( hd600 +sundara) would be perfect. :upside_down_face:

Great response although I have never understood that “All Focal headphones have a metallic sound” thing. I have been loving my Elex’s for a year and a half and have never heard it. Are you a really loud listener?

I can’t say that all Focals have it, I can hear it on my Elegia. I listen between 75db and 77db usually. It’s a subtle thing, while listening to an album it might come through a few times.

I would describe it as a slight echo or emphasis on a certain frequency. It adds a bit more to certain guitars and vocals.

It’s part of the signature that I like rather than sounding similar to other headphones.

I have never heard anything like that in my Elex’s or my Elegia’s but, as I said, I top out at about 72Db’s.

I love the Focals hard and hope to move up to the Clears and a better closed back in the Focal line.

I do agree with what you said regarding “end game”. Truly, endgame is whatever you say it is. If you love your current set-up and have no urge to upgrade, then that is end game for you.

I had an Elegia at one point and absolutely heard the “metallic” sound - it’s difficult to describe it without hearing it. But that isn’t on the Clear Mg nor on the Celestee, FWIW.

I still think the Elegia are the best closed-back headphones you can get under $400 (Adorama deal).

The Clears are something that there was a lot of hype over when it came out but after that initial period faded there is still interest in them. That’s how I judge the communities reaction to them :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I’ve seen the OG Clear with some good deals recently as sites try to move the old stock.
