šŸ”¶ Focal Elex

Wow really? Itā€™s worlds of difference, holy shit, you need to get them.

Is the RNHP good enough?

I think so, itā€™s definitely an upgrade over thx for the clear imo, it can go higher and scale better though if you want in the future

I have an order for the Suede perforated pads for my Aeolus. Do you think that the Verite pads are worth getting?

In your opinion where would be the major difference, Detail retrieval or bass rendering orā€¦?
Another thing, iĀ“m going to buy a Feliks Audio Echo for my ZMF Aeolus, iĀ“ve beeb hearing that the Clears doesnĀ“t pair well with tube amps, but i have seen a lot of Elears owners using tube amps and Feliks in particular because of the 80 Ohms. Do you thing that the Elex will pair well with the Echo? Focal uses the Feliks amps for Camjam. Do you or anyone have any feedback on this matter?
Thanks for your help.!!

No! Iā€™ve tried them and personally hated them on the Aeolus.

The elex will do fine on a tube, but I personally prefer most focals on solid state, kinda messes with them a bit too much for my tastes

Unfortunately Iā€™m not going to attempt to answer your question. I decided a long time ago that tube amplification is not my thing for a lot of reasons. Iā€™m a musician and I record mix and master music. Analog and tube amplification is very important and sought after when recording instruments. The distortion of analog equipment is sought after and important in making music sound warm, lush, big etcā€¦ But once the music is mixed and mastered with analog gear, and digitized, itā€™s my opinion that the cleanest digital method of representing the original recording is my aim. I am against using any form of amplification that modifies or colors the original. This is why recording engineers listen to their mixes on reference monitors, so they know how their mix should sound as a baseline standard. They donā€™t listen to their mixes on tubes that change their sound every day to the weather because they sound fatter and they like the fat bass response. That mentality would defeat the purpose of their aim. Listening to their work on professional monitoring speakers that represent the music as neutral as possible.

Like 80% of my mastering gear is tube based lol

This depends. For mixing this is the case, but for mastering using a hifi system is not uncommon at all, I rotate between my studio monitors (both main and 2ndary) and multiple higher end systems with r2r and tubes and stuff, when you check your master you want to check it on as many things as possible, so I also own some common consumer stuff too to reference and make sure it sounds good

M0N, I was imagining your head exploding reading my reply. lol If you re-read my post, youā€™ll see that I mentioned that analog/tube gear is sought after in the recording process. Real tube based equipment like Universal Audio are the holy grail of audio recording equipment. I have invested a lot of money in all of my Universal Audio gear. I have real analog tube amps and love them. I LOVE my analog gear.

But when it comes to reproducing the recordings of all that analog gear, Iā€™m not running it through analog gear to color the sound again. I want to use whatever will portray the sound as similarly as I have mixed and mastered it. I as well listen to my final mixes on different devices, especially car stereo systems.

Of course, just agreeing with you, sorry that might have been confusing the way I responded. I have build up a pretty nice mastering signal chain over the years myself

Also yes listening on car stereos is pretty important. Listening on phone speakers, soundbars, airpods, tvs, etc is good to do

ThatĀ“s good to know. You donĀ“t have the Aeolus right? You have the Auteur isnĀ“t it? The Aeolus is a beautiful sounding HP, when i want to sit down at night and just chill with my music, Aeolus is the answer, i think i will never sell this one, itĀ“s definitely a keeper. Do you prefer the Auteur or the Clear? Regarding of cost, iĀ“m not rich or anything but if gonna spend 1000+ i want more than just sound, (confort, build quality, looks) and ZMF is craftmanship in my eyes.

I will say the zmf have a more impressive build and a slightly better comfort for my head (but Iā€™m not super sensitive to comfort), you are def paying for and getting a work of art by buying a zmf lol

No doubt about it, my opinion exactly. But i was wondering more about the sound signature between the Clears and the Auteur. Because i can buy the Clear now if i want, but for the Auteur i would have to save for 4,5 months at least. But its only worth if the sound is at least on pair with the Clears on detail retrieval, bass rendering and vocals (vocal intimacy).

Thats what bothers me. Am i paying for the tech and research and time to develope a great sounding headphone? or am i paying for handmade ā€œartā€? I dont care if a headphone is made from used bicycle parts I want all my money going into sound. i want maybe 10% going into build and cable and packaging.

Thatā€™s also something I have thought about for a while. Not to diss Zachā€™s work I do enjoy my verite, but I have always thought the reviews on them have been tilted by their build and stuff, and less so importance on sound compared to other headphones that are from larger companies

I DO have the Aeolus.

Actually my favorite sounding headphone I currently own is my Lawton modded TR-X00 with marbled ebony cups.

Please donā€™t say but do you have Elex headphonesā€¦?
And that sbar blows themā€¦? Oh no! Dont even want to know how high then i need to aim to get even a good pair vs compared to my stereos.
Soundbars are good compared TV speakers but for actual good speakers. Nope.

Those are nice headphones but the Aeolus is way better. you really need those suede pads
