đŸ”¶ Focal Elex

Is it worth it to go balanced with the elex? I have an atom amp right now which is nice and clean but I wouldn’t mind something “colored”

Hmmm, well, I think it would only be worth going balanced if you get a balanced amp lol. I think if you wanted a warmer smoother and wider balanced amp, the liquid platinum sounds up your alley imo

Oooo that sounds nice. Elex would be good on a hybrid tube but not a darkvoice right? Would schitt hybrid be good as well? Doesn’t have to be balanced haha.

The schiit lyr 3 is also a solid pick (although personally I prefer the liquid plat)

The elex don’t do well on many otl or set designs from my experience imo

First time setting it up, does this look about right? Do I need to click on the ‘EQ’ button between the filters and ‘import’ so it stays green? Thanks in advance.

Pretty sure you want to leave it grey so it can use the filter settings there. Think green disables those filters

Cool, thanks. On the first listen I honestly can’t tell the difference but I’ll be listening back and forth all day until I have formulated an opinion.

On the off-chance you mean you can’t tell whether the EQ is even active, set your amp’s volume fairly low, then move the Pre-Amplfying slider at the top of the screen. If you don’t hear any loudness change as you move the slider, the EQ is not active.

To check if you’ve copied the settings correctly, click on the button with the green sine wave under the Effects button on the right. This shows a graph version of your settings. Compare that to the EQ Curve Total graph in the Oratory1990 PDF for the Elex.

Thanks for the help. I didn’t mean that I literally couldn’t tell whether it was working or not, more so that the differences are so subtle that on a first listen I can’t tell them apart. I haven’t had time to listen back and forth between the stock and EQ sound but I’m hoping to tell the differences once I sit down and focus.

Gotcha. The biggest single change is the drastic boost to the sub-bass. So perhaps listen to a track with lots of sub-bass action.

Absolutely. Beyond the sub-bass and depending on genre you may be hard pressed to find a track where the difference calls attention to itself.

The Elex’s dip in the upper mids would drive me crazy. But that’s only because i listen to certain old-timey orchestral music that needs that region to be well filled in or it sounds muffled.

CBiscuit can probably point us to more main stream test tracks.

Found a new play pal for my Elex’s: Burson Fun w/Classic opamps. Very nice sound. Smooth, full and lots of bangin’ bass.
I broke out my Burson to try the Sundara’s and the Elex’s. I tried the Sundara’s and to be honest that will require some A-B’ing with the THX as I am not sure which is better.

But the Elex’s are a home run on this puppy! I suspect that when all is said and done, each amp will be paired off with its own headphones.

I’ve noticed that with that whole drop sending people one elex ear pad, some people on the site are even questioning the quality of the one ear pad that was sent to them.

LOL I saw that the other day as well. I was thinking about buying a pair to put on my Focal Clears. They’ve been sold out for a while though. Personally I think it’s ridiculous for them to be actively selling Elex’s without being able to supply replacement pads.

The newer pads did seem inferior to the one on my Elex, but there wasn’t much in it.
I actually have a pair of the newer ones, because I ordered 2 pairs, I haven’t listened to them.

I think my favorite part so far of these headphones is the mid-bass and the sound of acoustic instruments.

Imaging still feels a bit, wonky, to me. I’m hoping this will clear up whenever I upgrade my amp and dac from my current atom and d10. Think that will be at the end and/or beginning of next year. Main issue is that the forward presentation doesn’t feel like it has much space to breath for me. Feels almost shoved in front of my face and also my forehead when the sound is higher in presentation.

Also hoping upgrading can smooth out the treble and clean up the sub-bass some for me.

what kind of music do you listen to out of curiosity?

Lately it’s mainly been a lot of metal and some idm/ambient. Going to change into hip hop and new age in the coming weeks.

Just put my Elex’s back on today. These really are a great pairing with the Liquid Platinum. They will be long term partners.

I had been running all my headphones through this new amp. I started with the Elex. Great for a day. Then went to Sundara’s which were eye-openingly good and went for several days. I changed to Fostex’s as I had a mod upcoming.

Tonight was supposed to be Meze 99’s, but I just had to do some comparo’s. I had a Blue Stones song and I was going back and forth between the Sundara’s and the 610’s. Then I thought “Well pull out the Elex’s and try them”. Man, these things are great. I think I will be stuck on the Elex’s for the next several days.

This amp was on sale for $549.00. It is a hybrid amp from Dr. Cavalli and sold by Monoprice. Drives the Elex’s perfectly!

Friends!!!

I also have an Elex that I am selling for 600. My lifestyle is much more conducive to portable set ups. Selling a few amps as well. DM me if you’re interested. I will sell stateside, free shipping

^^ Just an FYI to everyone, that’s the price they’re going for on Drop.com brand spanking new ($600) with Drop’s warranty (I don’t know if their warranty is transferable) albeit with a bit of a wait.
