Fostex T50rp MKIII vs AT M60X

Hey guys, looking to get one of these two cans for the office and can’t seem to pull the trigger on one or the other. I’ve listened to Z’s sound demos and they both offer something different. I was originally sold on the M570s but was advised on this forum that they wouldn’t be suited for an open office due to sound leakage.

Mon had recommended that I give the MKIIIs a shot and the sound demos sound great with the Sure pads. These do have a sound similar to the M570s and I love the punchy tight lows and appreciate the V shape sound.

My dilemma is that I also really love the soundstage and imaging of the M60X along with the mid range clarity. There was no competition in the acoustic guitar and vocal ranges, but I’m afraid that this strength is also its weakness. The flipside to that coin seems like the sound becomes a bit shouty and nasal or hollow almost?

So anyone that has experience with these… Please chime in and let me know if this is in-fact the case with M60X. Either way, if anyone has any insight to tip me one way or the other. If it helps, I listen to a bit of everything but mostly electronic stuff like Daft Punk, Flume, Thievery Corporation, Kruder & Dorfmeister, DJ Shadow, Jaimie XX etc…

Thanks Brochachos!

So do you already have the m60x? The m60x had pretty good mid-range but overall I didn’t think the headphone was that special as some made it out to be

No, I don’t have the M60x, but I will say that when I auditioned them next to the m40x and m50x, I remember thinking that I would absolutely love the m60 if they weren’t so shouty, but I guess that’s the tradeoff with that much midrange? I also liked the non piercing highs while still being sparkly.

I’m yet to hear the MKIII in person, but I will admit they sound a bit more “fun” from what I’ve heard in the sound demos.

What about sound stage and imaging? I really want that experience of being able to separate vocals from instruments and having that spacial separation. Which of the 2 would be better at this? Pfffff for all I know they’re just marginally better than the other and they’ll both suit my needs.

Would either one be better suited to my genres of music?

So properly powered I think the t50 mk3 would have more speration. It would also have better imaging imo.

For what you listen to I think the t50 would benefit you more, but it might be a bit harsher in the treble if not powered properly

Also if you get something from Amazon you can always return if something goes wrong for you

So I’d be going with what you recommended in the m570 thread… The xduoo xd05. So this is a pretty safe bet with the t50 then? For sure it would have to be a portable amp. I know the headphones aren’t the most portable setup either, but I have a huge bag I take to work so even some of the bigger Audezes wouldn’t be a problem carrying around.

What about EQing in these cases? Would I have an easier time dialing back the harshness of the highs in the t50 or the shouty m60s?

You can eq the t50 fairly well imo. I haven’t tried to eq a m60x. I personally don’t eq at all unless for studio work

I would say the xd05 is a great choice. I think if you can fit it in your budget, the xd05+ would be even better
