Fostex TH900 v's DT 1770

IEM’s aren’t really my thing and I don’t need them to be portable…One more closed back I’ve thought about is the Ultrasone Signature Pro, anyone have an opinion on these?

What iems are you talking about?

The ultrasone headphones are something you kinda have to go and hear, as they can be really strange sometimes. Personally I didn’t enjoy it that much, as the presentation was strange, but the build and comfort were great, and the isolation was really good, but imo it’s not as enjoyable of a headphone compared to what’s been mentioned here. It almost sounds artificial and exaggerated. I would say it’s more for studio monitoring or mixing then musical enjoyment

Also perhaps check out the Denon d7200 or d9200. Also biodynamic and sound really good

Cheers guys I appreciate your input
MON I have looked into the Denon option too thanks :+1:
I think it’s just a matter of picking one of the above discussed headphones and wait for one to come up at a good price, as it stands I think Fostex is the way to go but the TH900 might be a bit too step💰wise but we’ll see, otherwise maybe the Purplehearts or the TH-X00?

The purplehearts are the most fun (v shaped) out of the batch, and the ebony are the most balanced. All of them have the great properties of the biodynamic, but just different frequency responses

I take it most of the TH range take well to tubes as well?

I should say though that the soundstage on the th900 is better and more defined. The tr-x00’s are pretty narrow and intimate sounding.

They take ok to tubes, but because they are low impedance, you may have mixed results

You’d like to think so considering it’s price point lol.

Well it’s just made to be a bit less intimate and in your face then the x00 line. That’s just an added benefit

tried a few Ultrasone - the signature pro is no fun headphone - more a boring monitoring can like the Sony 7506 with better extension/resolution - the marketed soundstage is not as wide as expected …

Ultrasone sits 30km away from my place. Met the people at munich high end and wanted to visit the store

not yet sure about the Adam Audio SP-5 - but no… you want fun

Would you agree with this comparison? if so do the Purplehearts fall between these two when it comes to the overall sound etc?..thanks again buddy :beers:

I would say that the bass on the purplehearts is more prevalent and slightly better then the regular tr-x00, but still not as good as the th900 imo. So yes it does fall in the middle. But the treble is also boosted as well, so it can be a bit more fatiguing compared to the other tr-x00

If you’re into a more neutral sound you could try the TH610. I used to have both those and the TH900. Admittedly the 900 is a more “fun” sounding set, but for pure sound quality the 610 isn’t that far behind.

Also true, although personally I would rather get the tr-x00 ebony or the Denon d5200 at that price range if I was looking for a more balanced biodyna sound

Well after a long think and because I would only use closed backs when my lady wants a bit of peace (we live aboard a barge but she does have a pair of momentums) i’ve decided to go the IEM route as I can’t see the point in spending £400+ on a pair of closed that won’t sound as good as my opens…so a pair of Tin p1’s will be arriving Monday :tada: lets see if they live up to the hype???

Well, curious to see if they meet your expectations. Also see what they sound like on a tube lol

Damn right i’ll tube anything lol…we’ll see how they go, if not like the Mrs said get another pair of dt770 250’s :slightly_smiling_face:

Just out of interest (way out of my pay grade ) why would you pay for a pair of Verite closed when you could have a pair of open…anyone?

If you wanted a closed headphone. That’s pretty much why. Not everyone can have an open they can use alot

Yep I guess…reckon prison sucks for the audiophile mafia lol

???

Sorry but what, I’m probably missing something
