It turned out this was deliberate by the teacher to make sure students were actually thinking about the problem instead of jumping right in like the other problems. In the instructions they stated one wouldn’t work like the others. Which as a teacher I think is a neat idea!

Still funny to think of this as a real question, but reassuring in humanity to know the back story too.
